About the role

The role of Pharmacy Technician at Bronson at Home involves assisting pharmacists in filling prescriptions and preparing IV admixtures. The technician works in various settings including outpatient retail pharmacies, inpatient hospitals, and infusion pharmacies. Specific duties can vary based on the location and shift.

Responsibilities

  • Fills orders with appropriate medications for review and approval by a Registered Pharmacist.
  • Performs a variety of related technical, clerical, and supply duties.
  • Assists pharmacists in obtaining patient home medication histories and clarifying/reconciling home medications.
  • Utilizes the teach back method to provide patient medication education under the direction or supervision of the pharmacist.
  • Performs sterile medication compounding, including parenteral nutrition preparation, following institution policies, procedures, and protocols consistent with USP.
  • Runs and maintains pharmacy robotic medication compounding equipment.
  • Assists the pharmacist in reviewing and comprehending pharmacokinetic reports, collecting and entering patient height/weight into the department documentation system, and reviewing and comprehending patient lab reports or other unit-specific information.
  • Supports the bedside medication delivery program (meds to beds).
  • Coordinates the delivery of medications to patients.
  • Interacts with other hospital personnel to coordinate medication therapy for patients.
  • Supports specialty pharmacy programs, including coordination of shipping, medication ordering, inventory management of specialty prescriptions.
  • Compounds chemotherapy following institutional policies, procedures, and protocols consistent with USP.
  • Reconciles advanced level home medication histories for admission in the emergency department.
  • Manages advanced level automated dispensing cabinets, including configuration, maintenance, and optimization.
  • Maintains controlled substance diversion monitoring.
  • Manages inventory in large departments.
  • Processes prescription sales transactions through the point of sale system and cash register.
  • Fills prescriptions.
  • Answers and responds to phone calls.
  • Prioritizes and processes orders per instructions from the pharmacist.
  • Maintains work area and equipment in a clean and orderly condition.
  • Documents as required.

Requirements

  • A high school diploma or General Education Degree (GED) is required.
  • Permanent Michigan Pharmacy Technician license is required upon hire, with permanent licensure required within one year from issuance of temporary license.
  • PTCB certification is required by the State of Michigan to transition from temporary to permanent licensure.
  • Students currently enrolled in an accredited school of pharmacy with a valid pharmacy intern license are not required to have Pharmacy Technician Certification.

Qualifications

  • 3-6 months of experience and/or training in hospital, retail pharmacy, or elsewhere, or equivalent combination of education and experience is preferred.
  • If not previously trained, a 3-month formal training in pharmacy procedures is preferred.
  • Temporary or permanent Michigan Pharmacy Technician license required upon hire.

Skills

  • Skills in mathematics and basic algebra.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and analyze data from various systems and equipment.
  • Effective communication skills to report and discuss findings, as needed with pharmacists, hospital personnel, and external customers.
  • Self-motivation.
  • Accuracy and initiative to complete routine and urgent tasks.
  • Ability to effectively prioritize tasks within the constraints of stated objectives and to provide effective timely follow-up as needed.
