About the role
The Plant Engineer for the Auto Asphalt Plant oversees the operation, maintenance, and optimization of the asphalt production facility. This includes managing mechanical and electrical systems, ensuring equipment reliability, troubleshooting and resolving technical issues, and coordinating with maintenance teams to minimize downtime. The role also involves implementing process improvements, ensuring compliance with safety and environmental regulations, and supporting the installation and commissioning of new plant equipment to enhance productivity and quality.
Responsibilities
- Manufacture various asphalt products according to mix design and customer jobsite specifications.
- Perform pre- and post-shift inspections and report the condition of the plant for items needing repair.
- Operate controls to batch material and read/write delivery tickets to determine mix design for each load.
- Perform calculations for differing load sizes and load Hot Mix Asphalt into haul trucks.
- Operate a loader to supply material to the plant as needed.
- Shovel aggregate material for repairs or general housekeeping and clean spilled materials from walkways.
- Participate in major and minor repairs to the plant and plant area.
- Perform other duties as directed.

Requirements
- High school graduate or equivalent.
- Basic knowledge of specifications of different finished materials and capabilities of equipment.
- Ability to recognize various products by sight and understand proper plant operation.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in batch plant operation.
- Previous experience on various types of heavy equipment.
- Good mechanical repair skills, accurate math skills, and concise communication skills.
- Previous computer experience is preferred.
- One to three years of Plant Operator experience preferred.
Skills
- Understanding of processes and procedures involved in the production of asphalt products.
- Knowledge of safety and environmental issues and hazards related to asphalt plant operations.
- Basic math skills (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, percentages).
- Ability to think logically and problem-solve.
- Good perceptual skills for judging distances, motor skills for operating plant controls, and ability to recognize plant-related symptoms of problems.
- Ability to make sound judgments to prevent accidents.
- Computer literacy; ability to perform trigonometry is a plus.
Other Requirements
- Ability to climb ladders, lift plant components up to 50 pounds, work at heights of up to 100 feet, and move in a variety of body positions.
- Ability to operate a crane, forklift, and/or skid loader is preferred.
- Ability to work in confined spaces.
- Dependability, conscientiousness, and close attention to detail.
- Ability to read and understand instructions.
- Ability to work varying schedules to support customer needs.
Pay
$48.88 per hour, as prescribed by the applicable collective bargaining agreement. Candidates will be placed according to the union contract salary scale.
