About the Role
We are looking for an experienced Histotechnologist Manager to lead our lab team in St. Clair Shores, MI. This full-time, day-shift role offers a true work-life balance with no nights, no weekends, and no on-call. You’ll oversee daily lab operations, mentor staff, and ensure high-quality histology processes while collaborating closely with pathologists and leadership.
Responsibilities
- Lead the lab by overseeing daily workflows, team scheduling, and quality assurance to maintain smooth operations.
- Supervise, train, and mentor histotechnologists, technicians, and lab assistants.
- Guide routine and specialized histology processes, including tissue processing, embedding, microtomy, and special staining.
- Ensure compliance with high quality standards and regulatory guidelines.
- Collaborate with pathologists and leadership to support clear communication and patient care.
- Develop and oversee work processes, including workflow and staff assignments, to achieve efficiency, production, and quality goals.
- Prepare the laboratory for scheduled and unscheduled inspections from regulatory agencies and internal auditors.
- Provide oversight for routine histology functions such as processing, embedding, microtomy, and staining.
- Serve as a staff resource and assist with performance reviews.
- Troubleshoot issues related to specimen processing, embedding, microtomy, cryotomy, staining, frozen sectioning, coverslipping, and handling of irreplaceable tissue specimens.
- Support cross-departmental partnerships and communication among pathologists, pathologists' assistants, hospital staff, and clients.
- Mentor histotechnicians, histotechnologists, and laboratory support staff.
- Maintain workspaces in a neat, organized, and properly supplied manner.
- Train new employees and histology students/interns.
- Oversee department equipment maintenance and upgrades.
- Perform other position-related duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field (Master’s degree preferred).
- ASCP Histotechnician (HT) certification (or equivalent) and Qualification in Immunohistochemistry (QIHC) required.
- 6+ years of experience in a histology lab, including 3+ years in a supervisory role.
- Strong leadership, problem-solving, and communication skills.
- Proficiency in computer programs and applications, including Microsoft Office and healthcare systems like EMR.
- Ability to work independently, manage deadlines, and remain calm in difficult situations.
