About the role
This role is located at BMH Bronson Methodist Hospital and involves preparing histological slides for microscopic examination and diagnosis by Pathologists. The position requires a combination of academic and clinical experience or a specific military training course.
Responsibilities
- Examines, fixes, and processes human tissue sections for microscopic examination and diagnosis.
- Uses specialized dyes to stain samples, bringing out cellular structures for pathologists to identify abnormalities.
- Operates and performs basic computer programs associated with documentation and record keeping.
- Maintains quality and efficiency in specimen processing, test analysis, and record keeping.
- Follows laboratory safety policies and maintains proper handling and storage of reagents and hazardous materials.
- Verifies instrument functionality and troubleshoots as needed.
- Identifies and corrects issues affecting test performance or reporting.
- Participates in quality control activities and assists in training new employees.
- Assists in specimen dissection under supervision.
Requirements
- Experience in fixation, embedding/microtomy, processing, staining, and laboratory operations within the last five years.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently, exercise critical thinking, and maintain a positive attitude.
- Strong verbal communication skills and ability to provide excellent customer service.
- Ability to work irregular hours, including mandatory overtime, holidays, weekends, and on-call shifts.
- Some exposure to noxious fumes, unpleasant noises, and potential for occupational exposure to infectious materials.
Qualifications
- Route 1: Completion of a NAACLS accredited Histotechnician program within the last five years.
- Route 2: Combination of 12 semester hours in biology and chemistry, plus one year of full-time clinical experience in a histopathology laboratory within the last five years.
- Route 3: Combination of 12 semester hours in biology and chemistry, plus successful completion of a 50-week U.S. military histotechnician training course within the last ten years.
Skills
- Proficiency in specimen processing, test performance, and result reporting.
- Knowledge of laboratory safety protocols and quality control procedures.
- Ability to operate and maintain laboratory equipment.
