About the role
This position provides diagnostic, therapeutic, and preventive services through the preparation of tissue samples for microscopic examination by a pathologist.
Responsibilities
- Maintains a safe and clean work environment by following procedures, rules, and regulations.
- Handles and disposes of histological chemical stains and reagents safely.
- Fosters a cooperative atmosphere by collaborating with colleagues across departments.
- Maintains laboratory supplies inventory by checking stock, ordering supplies, and verifying receipts.
- Conserves laboratory resources by using equipment and supplies efficiently.
- Provides histology information by answering questions and requests.
- Documents technical information accurately in the LIS.
- Performs accessioning, embedding, sectioning, special stains, immunohistochemistry, and frozen sections, adhering to productivity guidelines and minimizing errors.
- Operates and maintains laboratory instrumentation, performs preventative maintenance, and troubleshoots problems.
- Participates in the laboratory quality plan/program, conducts quality controls, and documents QC for each lab procedure.
- Participates in external proficiency testing and continuing education classes to maintain licensure and stay updated in the histology field.
- Trains new staff and students by serving as a mentor and technical resource.
Requirements
- Required Education: Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university with coursework meeting ASCP requirements for Histotechnologist certification.
- Required Experience: One year of experience working in an acute care facility as a Histotechnologist or Histotechnician.
- Required Certifications: HTL(ASCP) certification.

- Ability to work cooperatively with all types of personalities.
- Physical Demands: Medium duty, exposure to blood-borne pathogens.
