About the role

This position provides diagnostic, therapeutic, and preventive services through the preparation of tissue samples for microscopic examination by a pathologist.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains a safe and clean work environment by following procedures, rules, and regulations.
  • Handles and disposes of histological chemical stains and reagents safely.
  • Fosters a cooperative atmosphere by collaborating with colleagues across departments.
  • Maintains laboratory supplies inventory by checking stock, ordering supplies, and verifying receipts.
  • Conserves laboratory resources by using equipment and supplies efficiently.
  • Provides histology information by answering questions and requests.
  • Documents technical information accurately in the LIS.
  • Performs accessioning, embedding, sectioning, special stains, immunohistochemistry, and frozen sections, adhering to productivity guidelines and minimizing errors.
  • Operates and maintains laboratory instrumentation, performs preventative maintenance, and troubleshoots problems.
  • Participates in the laboratory quality plan/program, conducts quality controls, and documents QC for each lab procedure.
  • Participates in external proficiency testing and continuing education classes to maintain licensure and stay updated in the histology field.
  • Trains new staff and students by serving as a mentor and technical resource.

Requirements

  • Required Education: Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university with coursework meeting ASCP requirements for Histotechnologist certification.
  • Required Experience: One year of experience working in an acute care facility as a Histotechnologist or Histotechnician.
  • Required Certifications: HTL(ASCP) certification.

Qualifications

  • Ability to work cooperatively with all types of personalities.
  • Physical Demands: Medium duty, exposure to blood-borne pathogens.

Skills

  • Knowledge of histology techniques and procedures.
  • Technical skills in handling and processing tissue samples.
  • Strong communication and documentation skills.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and maintain laboratory equipment.
