History Teacher-Upper
The Ethical Culture Fieldston School is a progressive PreK-12 independent school founded in 1878. It serves an inclusive community of about 1,700 students across two campuses in the Bronx and Manhattan. The Upper School, located in the Bronx, comprises approximately 600 students and 80 faculty members.
About the role
We are seeking a passionate High School History Teacher for the 2026-2027 school year. The successful candidate will teach at least two sections of Modern World History for 9th graders and two electives, ideally focusing on non-Western regions such as Africa, South Asia, the Middle East, and South America. The position is full-time (1.0 FTE) with a salary range of $75,261-$184,830.
Responsibilities
- Collaborate with colleagues to share resources and communicate about curriculum and students
- Prepare for and communicate student performance and growth at scheduled conferences
- Address student behavioral issues and maintain a safe, calm classroom environment
- Maintain accurate student records including grades and attendance
- Encourage students' social and emotional growth
- Maintain confidentiality of student information
- Attend departmental, divisional, and school-wide meetings
- Comply with school policies, state regulations, and educational standards
- Perform other related projects and duties as needed
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in history or a connected discipline such as social studies education, political science, Pan-African studies, international relations, women's studies, or ethnic studies
- Prior experience teaching history or a connected discipline
- Minimum of 3 years of teaching experience
- Prior experience working with students from grades 9 to 12
- A passion for teaching with a pleasant and positive demeanor
- The ability to collaborate and build strong relationships with faculty, administrators, students, parents, and the community
- The ability to maintain accurate student record-keeping of grades and attendance
- A commitment to cultural competency and fostering an inclusive environment
- Excellent verbal, written, and oral communication skills
- The ability to manage time effectively, stay organized, and prioritize tasks
- A commitment to ongoing professional development and proficiency in using new technologies
- A positive attitude and the ability to listen effectively and be receptive to feedback
- Reliability, punctuality, and consistent attendance
- The ability to cultivate a welcoming culture in which all members of the community feel valued and appreciated
