About the Role

The Secondary Teacher will provide guidance and instructional experiences that are academically and developmentally appropriate for each assigned student.

Responsibilities

  • Communicate accurately and effectively in the content area while maintaining a professional rapport with students.
  • Utilize a variety of teaching methods and resources for each area taught.
  • Apply student assessment techniques and procedures.
  • Obtain feedback from and communicate with students to enhance learning and understanding.
  • Comprehend and apply principles of student growth, development, and learning.
  • Manage the classroom to maximize instructional time and promote positive student behavior in a safe environment.
  • Recognize student diversity and create an atmosphere that promotes student involvement and self-concept.
  • Demonstrate willingness to examine and implement change as appropriate.
  • Work productively with colleagues, parents, and community members.
  • Follow board policies and administrative rules and regulations.
  • Prepare for instruction with written evidence of preparation.
  • Communicate accurate, up-to-date information to students using effective writing skills and standard English.
  • Manage time appropriately and cooperate with administration, parents, and co-workers.
  • Create a positive classroom atmosphere and arrange the physical environment for optimum learning.
  • Maintain accurate and complete records as required by the school district.
  • Report student progress or lack thereof to parents in a timely manner.
  • Attend and participate in faculty and committee meetings.
  • Complete assigned duties (hall, bus, etc.) and leave adequate preparations for a substitute.
  • Take precautions to protect equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Develop and implement classroom management strategies while maintaining high expectations for student behavior.
  • Encourage cooperation between students and maintain student involvement in tasks.
  • Demonstrate public relations skills and use appropriate conflict resolution techniques.
  • Adapt curriculum to meet the needs of individual students.
  • Use diagnostic data to improve instructional programs.
  • Use current technology for instruction and management purposes.
  • Be available to parents, students, administration, and peers outside the school day if needed.
  • Attend extra-curricular activities and report suspected child abuse and neglect.
  • Supervise students on field trips and act as a positive role model within the school context.
  • Supervise educational assistants, practicum students, student teachers, and high school vocational lab students.
  • Accept additional responsibilities as deemed necessary by the principal.

Requirements

  • BA degree.
  • Valid New Mexico teaching license with required endorsements.
  • Alternate qualifications may be considered as deemed appropriate by the Board.

Physical Requirements

  • Sitting, standing, lifting and carrying (up to 50 pounds).
  • Reaching, squatting, kneeling, and prolonged typing.
  • Physical ability to type on a keyboard terminal and move light furniture.

Equipment/Technology

Must know how to operate or be willing to learn all multimedia equipment, including current technology.

Work Environment

  • Work within various degrees of noise, temperature, and air quality.
  • Handle routine interruptions; flexibility and patience are required.
  • Must be self-motivated and able to complete job assignments without direct supervision.
  • After-hours work may be required.

Salary and work calendar established yearly by the district. FLSA Status: Exempt.
