About the role
Wisconsin Diagnostic Laboratories (WDL) is a subsidiary of Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin, offering comprehensive clinical laboratory services across various healthcare settings. As a Histology Technician or Histotechnologist, you will play a crucial role in preparing tissue specimens for pathological examination.
Responsibilities
- Consistently receives, accepts, and recognizes specimens and requests that arrive in the lab.
- Maintains specimen identification throughout the entire process.
- Handles special testing requests according to protocol, including the decal and processing for bone marrows.
- Operates and maintains Peloris and VIP processors, performing daily maintenance and troubleshooting.
- Embeds blocks in an acceptable amount of time, ensuring accurate labeling and orientation.
- Operates and maintains microtome, determining acceptable vs. unacceptable sections.
- Prepares and maintains stains, selecting appropriate reagents for routine and special staining.
- Uses Cerner to make changes to cases and verifies the quality of staining and coverslipping.
- Monitors and documents instrument performance, replacing blades as necessary.
- Performs cryostat operations, including freezing and cutting tissue, and producing acceptable slides.
- Ensures compliance with histology policies and procedures, adhering to local, federal, CLIA, and CAP regulations.
- Participates in competency assessments and challenges, maintaining records of competency and improvement plans.
- Develops, executes, and validates new procedures, writing and revising technical procedures.
- Trains and guides Histotechnician I and II, students, and lab assistants.
Requirements
- Associate’s Degree in Histotechnology or High School Diploma with HT or HTL ASCP certification or ASCP eligible.
- Bachelor’s degree in Histotechnology or Bachelor’s degree with a combination of 12 semester hours (18 quarter hours) of biology and chemistry (must include credit hours in both).
- Current HTL ASCP certification for Histotechnologist positions.
Qualifications
- Associate’s Degree in Histotechnology or High School Diploma with HT or HTL ASCP certification or ASCP eligible.
- Bachelor’s degree in Histotechnology or Bachelor’s degree with a combination of 12 semester hours (18 quarter hours) of biology and chemistry (must include credit hours in both).
- Current HTL ASCP certification for Histotechnologist positions.
