HISTOLOGY TECHNICIAN I OR II, OR HISTOTECHNOLOGIST, WDL; FULL TIME - 2ND SHIFT

About the role

Wisconsin Diagnostic Laboratories (WDL) is a subsidiary of Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin, offering comprehensive clinical laboratory services across various healthcare settings. As a Histology Technician I, II, or Histotechnologist, you will play a crucial role in preparing tissue specimens for pathological examination.

Responsibilities

• Consistently receives, accepts, and recognizes specimens and requests that arrive in the lab.
• Maintains specimen identification throughout the entire process.
• Handles special testing requests according to protocol, including the decal and processing for bone marrows.
• Operates and maintains Peloris and VIP processors, performing daily maintenance and troubleshooting.
• Embeds blocks in an acceptable amount of time, maintaining adequate paraffin supply and keeping the area clean.
• Operates and maintains microtome, determining acceptable vs. unacceptable sections and cutting blocks in a given timeframe.
• Prepares and maintains stains, selecting appropriate stains and reagents for routine staining.
• Performs manual special stains, choosing correct controls and evaluating slides for proper staining.
• Updates Cerner with necessary information, verifies completed tasks, and organizes and distributes slides.
• Develops, executes, and validates new procedures, writes and revises technical procedures, and provides guidance and training.
• Monitors and documents instrument performance, replaces blades, and correctly operates instruments for intended purposes.
• Trains new and existing staff, troubleshoots problems, creates, updates, and communicates new policies and procedures.

Requirements

• Associate’s Degree in Histotechnology or High School Diploma with HT or HTL ASCP certification or ASCP eligible.
• Successful completion of a NAACLS accredited Histotechnician program within the last 5 years prior to the date of application for examination, or a combination of 12 semester hours (18 quarter hours) of biology and chemistry from a regionally accredited college/university.
• Bachelor’s degree in Histotechnology or Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college/university with a combination of 12 semester hours (18 quarter hours) of biology and chemistry.
• Current HTL ASCP certification and evidence of certification maintenance if required by ASCP.

Qualifications

• Associate’s Degree in Histotechnology or High School Diploma with HT or HTL ASCP certification or ASCP eligible.
• Bachelor’s degree in Histotechnology or Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college/university with a combination of 12 semester hours (18 quarter hours) of biology and chemistry.
• Current HTL ASCP certification and evidence of certification maintenance if required by ASCP.

Skills

• Proficiency in operating Peloris and VIP processors.
• Knowledge of histology techniques and special staining methods.
• Ability to maintain accurate records and documentation.
• Strong organizational and communication skills.
