About the Role
The HIM Certified Coder reviews medical records and appropriately assigns Diagnosis and Procedure codes. Classification systems include ICD-9-CM, CPT, HCPCS, and other specialty systems as required by diagnostic category and current coding standards. All work is carried out in accordance with the rules, regulations, and coding conventions of the American Hospital Association (Coding Clinic), ICD-9 (ICD-10 when applicable), AMA CPT, and CMS coding guidelines.
Responsibilities
- Reviews patient records for procedures and diagnoses.
- Enters and maintains codes in the computer system.
- Ensures planning, productivity, and decision-making align with organizational standards.
- Preserves and protects patients' rights to confidentiality.
- Performs other job-related duties as requested.
Requirements
- High school graduation plus active certification as a Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) with evidence of additional education in Medical Terminology and Anatomy & Physiology.
- Certified Professional Coder (CPC) candidates will be considered but must pass the CCS exam within one year of hire.
- Minimum of 2 years’ experience in a hospital inpatient or outpatient setting.
