About the role
The Iowa Department of Transportation seeks Highway Technicians to inspect construction projects and assist with maintenance tasks.
Responsibilities
- Conduct routine sampling, inspection, and testing of materials used in highway construction
- Maintain construction records
- Inform contractors and project inspectors of construction quality issues and/or non-complying work
- Operate snow equipment to remove snow, ice, and frost from roadways
- Perform routine maintenance and servicing of DOT equipment and vehicles
- Repair and maintain guardrails, signs, fences, and lighting
Requirements
- CDL permit upon hire
- Class A and endorsements/restrictions on CDL within 5 months following hire
- Pre-employment physical verifying physical ability to perform duties
- Prior to employment, obtain and maintain Herbicide Applicator certification
- May be required to obtain other certifications as needed
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent, plus two years of full-time work in highway maintenance, equipment operation, construction inspection, field work in engineering survey, or materials inspection and testing
- Two years of education and/or full-time experience in the same fields as above, where 30 semester hours of post-high school education equals one year of full-time experience
- Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch as a Highway Technician Associate or Construction Technician Assistant
Skills
Ability to learn new software, access and utilize multiple applications, and efficiently execute a high volume of typing while using a variety of technical devices and software applications.
