Responsibilities
- Perform skilled manual labor and operate a tandem dump truck in construction, repair, and preservation of roads and bridges on the state highway system.
- Grade, set forms, pour and finish concrete for curbs, gutters, sidewalks, and driveways.
- Work on shoulders, ditches, drainage structures, and pavement markings.
- Operate a front-end loader to haul material to jobsites.
- Coordinate placement of traffic control devices to set up maintenance work zones according to the SCDOT Work Zone Traffic Control Manual and Field Guide.
- Repair potholes and base surface failures using hand tools such as shovels, picks, rakes, and asphalt lutes.
- Assist in emergency and inclement weather operations, including operating medium or heavy-duty equipment, with potential for extended working hours or 12-hour shifts.
- Perform preventive maintenance on assigned equipment.
Requirements
- Six (6) months of related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence.
- Valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required.
- Must attain a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.
Physical Demands
- Bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping, and physically manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
- Walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, and working in close proximity to motoring traffic and natural environmental hazards.
- Frequent exposure to outside environment in all weather conditions, noise, oil, or grease.
- May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather or emergencies.
Schedule
- May be required to work overtime, nighttime, and/or weekends during hazardous weather or emergencies.
