Job Responsibilities
- Performs skilled manual labor and operates a backhoe in various activities associated with road and bridge construction, repair, and preservation.
- Examples of tasks include grading, setting forms, pouring/finishing concrete for curbs, gutters, sidewalks, and driveways; performing work on shoulders, ditches, drainage structures, etc.
- Operates a front-end loader to load and haul materials for jobsites.
- Repairs potholes and base surface failures of roadway using hand tools like a shovel, pick, rake, and asphalt lute to level asphalt as needed.
- Coordinates the placement of traffic control devices to properly set up a maintenance work zone according to the SCDOT Work Zone Traffic Control Manual and Field Guide.
- Assists in emergency and inclement weather operations, including operating medium or heavy duty equipment.
- May include availability for extended working hours or 12-hour shifts.
Necessary Special Requirements
- A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required.
- Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.
Physical Demands
- Bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping, and physically manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material.
- Able to lift up to 50 lbs.
- Frequent exposure to outside environment in all weather conditions, noise, and oil or grease.
Additional Comments
- May be required to work overtime, nighttime, and/or weekends during hazardous weather or emergencies.
