Responsibilities

  • Operates medium duty equipment such as Roller, Skid Steer and Combination Tractor with side-mounted mower for construction, repair and preservation of roads and bridges.
  • Operates a 5-yard standard dump truck and flatbed truck for hauling material and transporting equipment for maintenance and construction operations.
  • Performs manual labor in activities associated with the construction, repair, and preservation of state highway roads and bridges.
  • Assists with the placement of traffic control devices to set up maintenance work zones.
  • Serves as a flagger to safely direct and control traffic in maintenance work zones.
  • Operates and maintains power tools and hand tools for highway and bridge maintenance activities.
  • Removes litter, debris, and dead animals from roadway and rights-of-way.
  • Operates small equipment such as snow plow and spreader in conjunction with highway and bridge maintenance operations, and standard dump truck with snow plow attachment and sand spreader or brine sprayer applicator for removal of snow and ice from highways and bridges.
  • Assists in emergency or inclement weather operations; may include being available for extended hours or 12-hour shifts.
  • Conducts and documents pre-trip equipment/vehicle inspection in accordance with the Department's most current rules, policies, and procedures for fleet safety.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Six (6) months of related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence.
  • A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required.
  • Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.

Physical Demands

The physical demands for the essential functions involve bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, and grasping. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. Walking for extended periods, treading rough terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and in natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside normal scheduled work week; especially during inclement weather.
