Highway Maintenance Worker

About the role

The South Dakota Department of Transportation (SDDOT) seeks a full-time Highway Maintenance Worker to ensure state highways are safe and drivable.

Responsibilities

• Perform roadway maintenance activities
• Perform roadside activities
• Install and replace signs, permanent traffic control devices, and pavement markings
• Maintain and repair guardrail systems
• Perform structure maintenance and repair activities
• Perform winter maintenance
• Maintain and repair department facilities and properties
• Perform preventative maintenance and equipment repair
• Respond to emergencies and other incidents
• Provide on-the-job training and work direction
• Provide temporary traffic control through and around work zones and emergency/hazardous sites
• Maintain documentation
• Operate and use a variety of equipment and tools
• Promote a safe work environment and participate in public safety awareness activities

Requirements

• Valid driver license and valid Commercial Driver License (CDL) within 120 days of hire date
• Class A CDL with the tanker endorsement and no restrictions
• Willingness to work night and shift work, including weekends and holidays
• Ability to lift up to 35 pounds routinely, up to 60 pounds occasionally, and 90 or more pounds infrequently
• Basic math skills
• Basic computer operation

• Experience in the operation of heavy equipment/farming or ranching equipment
• Experience in heavy construction
• Knowledge of preventive maintenance methods
• Basic math skills

Skills

• Use and maintain a variety of hand and power tools
• Operate, maintain, and repair various equipment and attachments
• Drive and operate a manual transmission

Pay and Schedule

• Total compensation: Hourly Wage + State/Federal Benefits
• Entry level annual salary: Approximately $67,003.00
• Work schedule: 10-hour days, 4 days per week, from Monday through Thursday (May 1 to September 30); 8-hour days, Monday through Friday (October 1 - April 30)
• Night and shift work required, including weekends and holidays
