About the role
The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) seeks a Highway Maintenance Technician in Cheyenne, Wyoming. This role involves maintaining and operating complex equipment safely and proficiently, assisting with training, and performing various maintenance tasks.
Responsibilities
- Maintains and operates complex equipment safely and proficiently
- Aids in training other technicians in the operation and maintenance of equipment
- Flags traffic and sets up traffic control devices under limited supervision
- Operates heavy equipment, including single and tandem axle trucks, augers, aerial lifts, plows, wing plows, sanders, and chemical systems
- Rehabilitates roadway surfaces and traffic control devices
- Maintains highway-related facilities such as rest areas, including water and wastewater treatment
- Attends and completes all state and federal training required to obtain/maintain certifications, perform inspections, and learn new skills
- Communicates information to update others' status and process effectiveness
- Uses computers for agency practices, such as training and performance evaluations, and stays updated on technological advances with specialized equipment
- Removes snow and ice from roadways, determining the effectiveness of treatments and making changes as necessary
- Adheres to all state and federal safety and quality standards, including the correct use of personal protective equipment
Requirements
- Possesses a current Class A Commercial Driver License (CDL) with appropriate endorsements
- Has the ability to obtain a Certification to operate specified equipment as directed by WYDOT
- Has the ability to obtain a Certificate of course completion of Defensive Driving
- Has the ability to obtain a First Aid/CPR certification
- Has the ability to obtain a Flagger certification
Qualifications
- Prior preference may be given to applicants with a current Class A CDL with appropriate endorsements
- Education: Associate's Degree (typically in Engineering)
- Experience: 0-1 year of relative work experience (typically in Highway Maintenance/Highway Construction)
Skills
- Knowledge of state highway pavement marking and signing standards
- Knowledge of state and federal highway safety standards and traffic control procedures
- Knowledge of equipment maintenance and repair procedures
- Knowledge of hazardous materials response procedures
- Knowledge of federal and state requirements for the proper use of personal protective equipment
- Knowledge of basic equipment operation for single and tandem-axle trucks, loaders, and tractors
- Knowledge of safe work procedures, First Aid and CPR, and OSHA Safety Data Sheets for chemicals used in maintenance activities
- Knowledge of and the ability to utilize basic office equipment such as computers, calculators, and telephones
