About the role
The role of a Highway Maintenance Technician at WYDOT involves maintaining and operating complex equipment safely and proficiently, assisting with training other technicians, and performing various maintenance tasks to ensure Wyoming’s highways meet the highest safety and quality standards.
Responsibilities
- Maintains and operates complex equipment safely and proficiently
- Aids in training other technicians in the operation and maintenance of equipment
- Flags traffic and sets up traffic control devices under limited supervision
- Operates heavy equipment, including single and tandem axle trucks, augers, aerial lift equipment, plows, wing plows, sanders, and chemical systems to remove snow and ice from the roadway surface
- Rehabilitates roadway surfaces and traffic control devices, such as signs and pavement markings
- Maintains and rehabilitates highway-related facilities, including rest areas, ensuring compliance with EPA and DEQ requirements
- Attends and completes all state and federal training required to obtain/maintain certifications, perform inspections, and learn new skills
- Communicates information to update others' status and process effectiveness
- Utilizes computers for agency practices, such as for training and performance evaluations, and stays updated on technological advances with specialized equipment
- Removes snow and ice from roadways, determining the effectiveness of treatments and making necessary adjustments
- Adheres to all state and federal safety and quality standards, including the correct use of all associated personal protective equipment
Requirements
- Possess a current Class A Commercial Driver License (CDL) with appropriate endorsements
- Ability to obtain a Certification to operate specified equipment as directed by WYDOT
- Ability to obtain a Certificate of course completion of Defensive Driving
- Ability to obtain a First Aid/CPR certification
- Ability to obtain a Flagger certification
- Knowledge of state highway pavement marking and signing standards
- Knowledge of state and federal highway safety standards and traffic control procedures
- Knowledge of equipment maintenance and repair procedures
- Knowledge of hazardous materials response procedures
- Knowledge of federal and state requirements for proper use of personal protective equipment
- Knowledge of basic equipment operation for single and tandem axle trucks, loaders and tractors
- Knowledge of safe work procedures, First Aid and CPR, and OSHA Safety Data Sheets for chemicals used in maintenance activities
- Knowledge of and the ability to utilize basic office equipment such as computers, calculators, and telephones
Qualifications
- Prior preference may be given to applicants with a current Class A Commercial Driver License (CDL) with appropriate endorsements
- Education: Associate's Degree (typically in Engineering)
- Experience: 0-1 year of relative work experience (typically in Highway Maintenance/Highway Construction)

- FLSA: Non-Exempt
- WYDOT conducts motor vehicle record checks to verify that candidates possess a valid driver's license.
- Individuals in these positions must pass a pre-employment drug screening and physical and will be subject to random drug and alcohol testing.
- Individuals in these positions must be available for emergency work calls at any time, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Acceptance of an appointment to this classification signifies that the individual is aware of this requirement and will comply with it. Failure to be available for emergency work without an acceptable excuse will be grounds for immediate disciplinary action and possible dismissal.
- Employees must report to the department shop within 30 minutes of receiving a call.
- Occasional overnight travel is required.
- Individuals in these positions may be asked to obtain water certifications if necessary.
- Individuals in these positions must have the ability to successfully complete the following training provided by WYDOT: Certification to operate specified equipment, Defensive Driving, First Aid/CPR certification, and Flagger certification.
