About the role

The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) is seeking a motivated and reliable Highway Maintenance Technician to join our team in Saratoga, Wyoming. This position performs a variety of highway and infrastructure maintenance duties under limited supervision to ensure a safe, high-quality, and efficient transportation system for the traveling public.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains and operates complex equipment safely and proficiently
  • Assists with training other technicians in the operation and maintenance of equipment
  • Operates heavy equipment, including, but not limited to, single and tandem axle trucks, equipped with an auger, aerial lift equipment, or equipped with plows, wing plows, sanders, and chemical systems to remove snow and ice from the roadway surface
  • Responsible for the rehabilitation of roadway surfaces and/or traffic control devices such as signs and pavement markings
  • Responsible for general maintenance of highway-related facilities such as rest areas; this may include performing water and wastewater treatment according to EPA and DEQ requirements
  • Attends and completes all state and federal training required to obtain/maintain certifications, perform inspections, and learn new skills
  • Communicates information to update others' status and/or process effectiveness
  • Utilizes computers for agency practices, such as training and performance evaluations, and keeps up to date on technological advances with specialized equipment
  • Performs duties involved in removing snow and ice from roadways; determines the effectiveness of treatments and may determine when a change in treatment is necessary
  • Responsible for adhering to all state and federal safety and quality standards, including the correct use of all associated personal protective equipment

Requirements

  • Must have the ability to obtain a Class A Commercial Driver's License
  • Must have the ability to obtain a Certification to operate specified equipment as directed by WYDOT
  • Must have the ability to obtain a Certificate of course completion in Defensive Driving
  • Must have the ability to obtain a First Aid/CPR certification
  • Must have the ability to obtain a Flagger certification

Qualifications

  • PREFERENCES: Must have the ability to obtain a Class A Commercial Driver's License.
  • KNOWLEDGE/AGENCY REQUIREMENTS: Knowledge of state highway pavement marking and signing standards; knowledge of state and federal highway safety standards and traffic control procedures; knowledge of equipment maintenance and repair procedures; knowledge of hazardous materials response procedures; knowledge of federal and state requirements for the proper use of personal protective equipment; knowledge of and the ability to utilize basic office equipment such as computers, calculators, and telephones.

Pay

$2,000 Hiring Bonus (eligibility applies)

Schedule

Frequent use of manual and powered hand tools
Daily use of motor vehicles and heavy equipment
Frequent exposure to hazardous materials
Ability to lift and carry 50 pounds independently
Ability to stand/sit and operate equipment for long periods
Work in adverse environmental conditions, which may include, but not be limited to, rain, snow, heat, and hail
Work around high-speed traffic and heavy construction equipment

Notes

  • FLSA: Non-Exempt
  • WYDOT will conduct motor vehicle record checks to verify a valid driver's license.
  • Individuals in this classification must pass a pre-employment drug screening and/or physical and will be subject to random drug and alcohol testing.
  • Individuals in this classification must be available for emergency work calls at any time, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Acceptance of an appointment to this classification signifies that the individual is aware of this requirement and will comply with it. Failure to be available for emergency work without an acceptable excuse will be grounds for immediate disciplinary action and possible dismissal.
  • Employees would only be eligible for one (1) hiring bonus in a 12-month period.
  • Individuals must report to the department Shop within 30 minutes of receiving a call.
  • The Wyoming Department of Transportation is a Drug-Free Workplace.
