About the role
The Department of Transportation (CDOT) is seeking a Highway Maintenance Specialist in Frederick, CO. Applications are welcome from both residents and non-residents of Colorado.
Responsibilities
- No two days are exactly the same. Daily tasks vary based on project needs and weather conditions.
- On-call and subject to call for emergencies.
- Work in a team environment, with at least one lead highway maintenance specialist and multiple specialists per patrol location.
- Perform various tasks including plowing snow, operating heavy equipment, mowing grass, removing debris, installing and repairing guardrails, and filling potholes.
- Ensure roadways are safe and operational by stopping or slowing traffic in emergencies and maintaining equipment.
Requirements
- At least two (2) years of physical labor and/or heavy equipment operation experience.
- A valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class A or B with no restriction on air brakes that allows operation within Colorado.
- Eligibility to drive in Colorado with your CDL at time of hire.
- Ability to work in extreme temperatures, variable weather conditions, and at varying elevations up to 12,000 feet.
- Willingness to respond to emergencies outside regular work hours and work overtime including weekends and holidays.

- Effective communication skills, especially in safety-critical situations.
- Experience operating heavy equipment such as dump trucks, loaders, and bulldozers.
- Basic computer skills and willingness to learn new software/equipment.

Pay
Base pay for this position is $2,074.62 /biweekly ($53,940/annually). Additional housing stipend of $1000/month is available.
Schedule
Typically 40-hour work weeks with the possibility of overtime during weather emergencies. A 4-day work schedule (10-hour days Monday-Thursday) is offered during the summer months, typically May through September.
