Highway Maintenance Specialist - Delta (CDL Required)

About the Role

CDOT is seeking a Highway Maintenance Specialist in Delta, CO. This role is ideal for individuals with a Colorado Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License who are passionate about safety, travel, and hands-on repair and improvements. The position offers a total annual compensation of $53,940, with a base pay of $2,074.62 biweekly. The annualized hourly rate is $25.93, with an overtime rate of $38.90/hour.

Responsibilities

• Plowing snow
• Operating heavy equipment, such as tandem dump trucks, loaders, and tractor mowers
• Mowing grass and weeds
• Removing debris from roadways, including rock, mud, and deceased animals
• Clearing debris from culverts and tunnels
• Shoveling gravel, sand, concrete, and asphalt
• Digging ditches
• Installing and repairing guardrails, highway markers, signs, and lighting
• Filling potholes and roadway cracks
• Setting out signs and cones for traffic control
• Removing and covering graffiti
• Installing pavement markings/striping
• Stopping or slowing traffic in emergency situations
• Maintaining equipment and performing minor repairs
• Following safety guidance and wearing proper safety equipment

Qualifications

• At least two (2) years of physical labor and/or heavy equipment operation experience
• Valid Commercial Driver’s License Class A or B with no restriction on air brakes
• Ability to work in extreme temperatures, variable weather conditions, and at varying elevations up to 12,000 feet

Work Environment

• Exposure to loud noise, fumes, odors, gasses, and dust

• Work near traffic, sometimes high-speed
• Use of ladders and scissor lifts for heights up to 20 feet
• Frequent response to emergencies outside regular work hours, including weekends and holidays

Conditions of Employment

• Must possess and maintain a valid Commercial Driver’s License Class A or B
• Pass pre-employment screening, including criminal records and driving records checks
• May be required to pass a controlled substance test and DOT physical
• On-call work on a rotating basis and subject to call for emergencies
• Essential Services Designation – Required to report without delay for emergency services
• May be required to live within 30 minutes' driving time from the workstation
• Complete maintenance training (two weeks for new employees, one week annually for veterans)
• May be required to obtain a Hazardous Materials endorsement within 6 months to 1 year
