General Description
This is a professional position responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of a branch public library within the Highlands Library System.
Essential Job Functions
- Manages the day-to-day operations of the Highlands Library System
- Provides guidance to the Avon Park Library and Lake Placid Memorial Library Librarians, as needed
- Oversees staff hiring and professional development
- Curator staff training plans on items such as, cataloging and technical services
- Maintains branch library's inventory of books, serial publications, documents, audiovisual equipment, and other materials
- Aids groups and individuals in locating and obtaining materials
- Provides general public with information pertaining to library activities, facilities, rules, and services
- Aids clientele in the use of reference sources, such as card or book catalogs or book and periodical indexes
- Describes or demonstrates procedures for searching catalog files
- Aids in the planning and direction of special projects and library promotions
- Selects and recommends materials for purchase
- Catalogs and classifies new library materials
- Responds productively to change and performs all other related tasks as required and as directed
- Maintains a professional and safe unit and work area adhering to established safety policies and the image desired for the organization
- Fulfills all other related tasks as required and as directed
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of the principles and practices of public library procedures
- Knowledge of work methods and techniques related to public service work
- Ability to work in harmony with the general public
- Ability to catalog, classify, and file library materials
- Ability to communicate accurately and clearly, both orally and in writing
- Ability to enforce library rules and regulations protecting public safety
- Ability to function independently of a direct supervisor
- Ability to use computers and learn new programs as needed
- Ability to maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, managers, supervisors, directors, elected officials, vendors, and the general public
Physical Skills
- Must be able to remain in a stationary position for 25% of the time
- Must be able to inspect and assess daily email and postal mail correspondence
- Frequently operates various types of office equipment to include, but not limited to a computer and copy machine
- Occasionally ascends/descends stairs
- The individual in this position frequently communicates with the public, vendors and co-workers
- Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations
- Frequently moves materials and office equipment weighing up to 25 lbs
- Constantly works in an indoor environment
- Rarely works in inclement outdoor weather conditions
- Rarely operates motor vehicle for up to (4) hours continuously or intermittently
- Must be able to frequently position self to reach files and other office items located on high and low shelves or the floor
Minimum Qualifications
- Education and Experience: Graduation from an A.L.A. accredited four-year college or university with a degree in Library and Information Science. M.L.S. or M.L.I.S required. A minimum of five (5) years' experience with daily library functions of which two should have been in a supervisory capacity.
- Licenses, Certifications, or Registrations: Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Driver License.
