High Voltage Technician
The Role
As a High Voltage Electrical Technician, you will play a critical role in ensuring the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of our power distribution infrastructure. You will provide hands-on technical expertise in the installation, testing, troubleshooting, and maintenance of low, medium, and high voltage (LV/MV/HV) electrical distribution systems up to 138kV+. This includes work on switchgear, substations, transformers, breakers, protective relay systems, grounding systems, and associated high voltage infrastructure.
You will work closely with Operations, Engineering, and Maintenance teams to maintain regulatory compliance, minimize downtime, and continuously improve the reliability and operational performance of the facility’s electrical distribution network.
What You’ll Do
- MV / HV Electrical Systems (up to 138kV+)
- Perform maintenance, testing, and troubleshooting on MV/HV electrical systems, including switchgear, breakers, transformers, and distribution equipment
- Lead and support medium and high voltage switching activities, lockout/tagout (LOTO), and energy isolation procedures in accordance with NFPA 70E and company standards
- Inspect, test, and maintain protective relays, grounding systems, and electrical protection schemes
- Perform substation maintenance, transformer inspections, and cable testing (megger, insulation resistance, hi-pot as applicable)
- Support commissioning and startup of medium and high voltage power distribution infrastructure
- Cook up switching plans, outages, and energization activities with utility providers and engineering
- LV Electrical & Distribution Support
- Perform maintenance and troubleshooting on low voltage (120V–600V) distribution equipment, motor control centers (MCCs), and breakers
- Diagnose electrical faults, wiring issues, and distribution problems to reduce downtime
- Aid in installation, commissioning, and electrical system upgrades
- Read and interpret single-line diagrams, electrical schematics, and protection drawings
- DC Power & Backup Systems
- Maintain and troubleshoot industrial DC power systems, including rectifiers, converters, DC panels, and battery backup systems supporting protective relays and substation control
- Safety & Compliance
- Ensure compliance with EHS policies, electrical safety standards, Safe Work Permit, and Energy Control procedures
- Maintain strict adherence to NFPA 70E, NEC, IEEE, OSHA PSM requirements, and company electrical safety programs
- Provide on-call support and collaborate across Operations, Engineering, Trades, and Planning teams
What We’re Looking For
- Technical diploma or associate degree in Electrical Technology, Power Distribution, Industrial Electrical, or related field
- 3–6+ years of experience in power generation, utility, substation, data center infrastructure, or heavy industrial environments
- Demonstrated hands-on experience with MV/HV systems (up to 138kV preferred)
- Proven experience supporting substations, protective relays, transformers, and switching procedures
- Experience with high voltage testing equipment, including meggers, hi-pot testers, and relay test sets
- Proficiency using multimeters, calibrators, loop testers, megohmmeters, and electrical test equipment
- Strong working knowledge of NEC, NFPA 70E, IEEE standards, and OSHA PSMAbility to work independently and in a team environment with minimal supervision
- Willingness to accommodate overtime and call-out support as needed
