About the role

The Thermal Sciences & Engineering Team in the Energy Sciences Division of DEVCOM Army Research Laboratory (ARL) seeks a PhD student in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, and related fields for an internship focusing on phase change composites with high thermal conductivity.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with top researchers (both within ARL and across the research community)
  • Contribute to the development and discovery of materials, composites, and use cases that could revolutionize thermal management systems and energy storage solutions
  • Conduct experiments to explore the thermal properties of phase change composites under various conditions
  • Synthesize and fabricate materials using advanced techniques such as nanomaterial integration, additive manufacturing, photolithography, and advanced machining
  • Apply your Mechanical Engineering studies to Army-relevant challenges, including understanding heat transfer mechanisms and designing experiments to test hypotheses

Requirements

This internship is open to PhD students in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, and related fields. Applicants should have a strong academic background and be prepared to engage in diverse and hands-on research activities.

Qualifications

  • PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, or a related field
  • Strong academic record
  • Experience in materials science and engineering
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively
  • Interest in Army-relevant research and applications
