Herbert and Florence Irving Professor of Biology or Biophysics, and Professor of Chemistry
This is an open-rank search for the inaugural Herbert and Florence Irving Professor of Biology or Biophysics and Professor of Chemistry. Special consideration will be given to candidates working in the field of chemical biology whose research contributes to understanding and curing cancer.
About the role
The successful applicant will be eligible to join the Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center (HICCC) and/or the Irving Institute for Cancer Dynamics (IICD) at Columbia University. Barnard College is an independent liberal arts undergraduate college for women in New York City, affiliated with Columbia University.
The Barnard Chemistry department currently consists of eight tenure-line faculty, three lecturers, a core facilities and laboratory instrument manager, a senior associate laboratory director, and three lab instructional specialists. The standard teaching load for a tenure-line faculty member is two courses per semester, including advanced electives and introductory courses.
In late 2026, all physical and life sciences departments will move into the newly renovated Roy and Diana Vagelos Science Center, where this position will include a 740-square-foot lab with adjoining office and access to shared resources and equipment.
Responsibilities
- Teach in the biochemistry or organic chemistry course sequences (special consideration for those who can teach in both)
- Engage in research, undergraduate curriculum development, teaching, advising, and research mentoring
Requirements
- PhD degree in chemistry, biochemistry, chemical biology, or a related discipline
- Dedication to undergraduate education both in the classroom and laboratory
- Research program that furthers the understanding and treatment of cancer
- Postdoctoral experience (strongly preferred)

Salary range: $100,000 to $250,000
Schedule
