Theoretical Biology and Biophysics Research Internship

About the role

We are seeking graduate students with an undergraduate degree in biology, mathematics, statistics, physics, computer science or related fields to join our research teams at Los Alamos National Laboratory. This internship is available in the T-6: Theoretical Biology and Biophysics group, part of the Theoretical Division (T-Division).

Responsibilities

• Work on a research project with a staff scientist mentor and co-mentor in areas such as modeling biological systems, analyzing data, and integrating heterogeneous biological data.
• Contribute to multi-disciplinary collaborations supporting the laboratory's strategic basic research and national security missions.
• Engage in scientific research and communicate findings professionally in both verbal and written formats.
• Use standard scientific programming languages and high-performance computing tools.
• Apply machine learning and AI methods to biological problems.
• Collaborate effectively with colleagues from diverse backgrounds and disciplines.
• Analyze and interpret complex biological data sets.

Requirements

• Currently enrolled in an accredited graduate degree program in biology, mathematics, statistics, computer science, physics, or a related STEM discipline.
• Maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.2 on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent).
• Enrolled in at least 6 semester credit hours (or full-time equivalent).
• Experience conducting scientific research.
• Demonstrated ability to communicate well in a professional scientific context.
• Familiarity with one or more standard scientific programming languages.
• Experience with high-performance computing.
• Experience with machine learning and AI methods.
• Ability to work collaboratively with staff and students from diverse backgrounds and disciplines.
• Strong critical thinking and data analytical skills.

Work Location

The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
