This posting is for permanent, full-time, represented, safety-sensitive positions within Utilities in the Department of Public Works. The role can be assigned to any location within the Bureau Utilities and involves full journeyman-level work in the maintenance and repair of automotive, trucks, and related gasoline and diesel-powered equipment.

About the Role

Work involves responsibility for skilled tasks in the mechanical and electrical repair and maintenance of automotive equipment, including police vehicles, passenger cars, trucks, tractors, mowers, and other standard or specialized equipment. Assignments are received via work orders, and employees work under general supervision, using independent judgment for diagnosis and repair. Work is inspected during and after completion.

Responsibilities

  • Tune engines, gap and replace spark plugs, set timing; replace cylinder heads and gaskets; grind valves; make service calls.
  • Repair and overhaul transmissions, differentials, front and rear end assemblies; turn brake rotors and drums.
  • Utilize computerized diagnostic equipment to determine service requirements.
  • Inspect, adjust, and replace necessary units and related parts, including brakes, cooling, ignition, electrical, and fuel systems, mufflers, and exhaust pipes.
  • Repair and overhaul generators, carburetors, and clutch assemblies; replace broken axles and springs; replace hydraulic lines and cylinders.
  • Repair and overhaul air compressors, portable pumps, chain saws, lawn mowers, and other specialized equipment; perform limited welding and blacksmithing related to repairs.
  • Perform related work as required.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school or vocational school.
  • Two or more years of experience in the repair and maintenance of automotive equipment at the full performance level.
  • Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification for ASE T Series: Medium-Heavy Truck (T1-T8). Note: Candidates without ASE certification must obtain it within six months of employment.
  • A valid commercial Class B motor vehicle operator's license without air brake restriction. Note: Candidates without a Class B CDL must obtain it within six months of employment and must possess at least a non-provisional Class C driver's license at the time of application. Candidates must also be able to acquire a medical certificate as mandated by federal laws to obtain a CDL Learner's Permit.
  • This position is safety-sensitive; employees are subject to controlled dangerous substance (CDS) and alcohol testing.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) without air brake restriction.
  • Experience in the general maintenance and repair of heavy-duty trucks and off-road equipment with complex hydraulic systems, such as loaders, backhoes, street sweepers, vactors, and roll-off trucks.
  • Additional Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifications.

Skills

  • Considerable knowledge of methods, materials, tools, diagnostic instruments, and techniques used in automotive repair.
  • Considerable knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions in the trade.
  • Skill in using and operating diagnostic equipment, tools, and machinery for automotive repair.
  • Ability to diagnose defects in automotive equipment.
  • Ability to adapt available tools and repair parts to specific repair problems.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to interpret and work from service manuals, specifications, and diagrams.
