About the role

This position is responsible for providing maintenance and repair on the City's heavy vehicles and equipment in support of Department operating activities. This position is focused primarily on Preventive Maintenance (PM), Vehicle/Equipment inspections, and minor repairs.

Responsibilities

  • Examines equipment and attachments for wear, breakage, and malfunctions of such assemblies as hoists, boom mechanism, final drive and power train, steering mechanisms, suspension, stabilizer systems, winches, chassis, and framework.
  • Employs specialized testing equipment to localize malfunctions in electronic control systems.
  • Dismantles such components as power transmission units, diesel engines, power controls, and hoist shaft mechanisms to determine repair and replacement parts required.
  • Disassembles and inspects gears, shafts, and other moving parts to determine the need for adjustment and/or repairs.
  • Removes engines drivetrain, or other defective parts.
  • Employs precision measuring devices and power shop tools such as grinders, drills, and cutting torch.
  • Test operates equipment to ensure correction of all deficiencies.
  • Interprets and applies information contained in manufacturers manuals, computer-based manuals, and other data pertinent to maintenance of vehicles and equipment.
  • Performs final inspection.
  • Assists workers of other classifications with their duties.
  • Operates service truck or wrecker when necessary.
  • Observe all job-site safety regulations.
  • Prepares the necessary records for reporting parts usage, and labor accounting requirements.

Qualifications

  • Must be able to use hand-held scanners and laptop diagnostic equipment.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
  • Proven leadership ability, dependability, and cooperation.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and effectively direct the work of co-workers.
  • Knowledge of safety practices and procedures to ensure all co-workers operate in a safe manner.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to perform the following assignments: straight pulling, reaching over the shoulder, pushing, walking, standing, kneeling, etc.
  • Ability for rapid mental muscular coordination simultaneously.
  • Working ability to read and understand operating manuals, service manuals, (both written and computer) and written instructions relative to the job.
  • Ability to operate and test all equipment that the incumbent is responsible for repairing.
  • Ability to repair and perform work on any piece of equipment City owns.
  • Must have a general working knowledge of electrical, electronic, hydraulic, mechanical, and air systems.
  • Must have hand tools relevant to this type of repair work upon reporting to work.
  • Must be able to obtain and hold a CDL, Group B, within 60 days from date placed into position.
  • Working knowledge of equipment used for engine electronic, and engine component test analysis.
  • Must successfully pass a pre-employment physical.

Schedule

City Employees hired/rehired between 1/1/2017 and 12/31/21 that are members of the City AFSCME labor union can choose to enroll in either the PERF My Choice: Retirement Savings plan or the PERF Hybrid plan. Both plans are described above. Employees have 60 days to choose which option they want, and by state law this cannot be changed. If no choice is made, the employee will then be automatically added to the PERF My Choice: Retirement Savings plan.

The Indiana General Assembly has enacted a provision that allows public employees to make voluntary contributions in addition to the mandatory three percent (3%) contributions. Employees may contribute up to an additional ten- percent (10%) of their compensation per pay period to the annuity savings account. This means that the maximum level of contributions to the annuity savings account under this new provision is thirteen percent (13%) of an employee's compensation per pay period.
