Position Summary

The Heavy Equipment Operator is an entry level position in the construction, maintenance and repair of electrical transmission systems. This position works at various locations. The position may also be required to travel to another state depending on customer demands.

About the Role

Frequent tasks include stringing overhead wire, setting poles and anchors, installing transformers, lightning arrestors, cutouts, crossarms, insulators, switches and switchgear. Responsibilities also include assisting with replacing fuses in transformers, clearing faulted circuits and systems, maintaining company vehicles, equipment and tools in good working order, performing rigorous physical labor, operating heavy equipment, understanding proper use of company radio, understanding basic rigging, hand lines, and lineman knot tying, understanding the proper use and maintenance of hand tools, identifying primary and secondary voltage on a circuit, understanding induced voltage, understanding minimum approach distance, understanding flag and tag procedures, understanding basic concepts of equipment setup and grounding, understanding how and when to use Kellum grips, and identifying different types of materials used in line work.

Responsibilities

  • Work safely while performing new construction, maintenance or repair work of energized and de-energized overhead work.
  • String overhead wire.
  • Set poles and anchors.
  • Assists with installing transformers, lightening arrestors, cutouts, crossarms, insulators, switches and switchgear.
  • Assists in replacing fuses in transformers and clears faulted circuits and systems.
  • Maintain company vehicles, equipment and tools in good working order.
  • Able to perform rigorous physical labor.
  • Able to understand proper use of company radio.
  • Able to operate heavy equipment.
  • Able to understand basic rigging, hand lines, and lineman knot tying.
  • Able to understand the proper use and maintenance of hand tools.
  • Able to receive and follow directions.
  • Able to learn basic knowledge of materials used in line work.
  • Able to identify primary and secondary voltage on a circuit.
  • Familiar with induced voltage.
  • Able to assist with the installation and hook up of a single phase transformer.
  • Able to perform basic bucket rescue/escape.
  • Able to understand the basic concepts of equipment set up and grounding.
  • Able to check voltage on transformers.
  • Able to understand flag and tag procedures.
  • Able to install and remove a service.
  • Able to properly inspect rubber goods and PPE.
  • Able to identify different types of materials used in line work.
  • Able to work outside, frequently in inclement weather.
  • Able to work for extended periods in various locations, when required.
  • Able to lift in excess of 50 lbs.
  • Able to properly inspect rubber goods and PPE.
  • Able to work over-time when requested.
  • Able to work outside of the normal work schedule including weekends, holidays, and overtime as required for the position.

Requirements

  • 1-2 years of experience.
  • Able to read and communicate effectively in English.
  • Able to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License permit within 60 days of employment.
  • A Commercial Driver’s License is preferred.
  • Able to travel long distances on short notice, when required.
  • Able to work for extended periods in various locations, when required.
  • Able to lift in excess of 50 lbs.
  • Able to properly inspect rubber goods and PPE.
  • Able to work outside, frequently in inclement weather.
  • Able to work over-time when requested.
  • Able to work outside of the normal work schedule including weekends, holidays, and overtime as required for the position.
