The Heavy Equipment Operator role involves operating various types of automotive equipment and performing related manual tasks. Employees are responsible for the safe and efficient operation of equipment, minor mechanical repairs, and adherence to supervisor instructions. This is an essential personnel position requiring availability during emergencies such as winter storms, coastal storms, and special events.
Responsibilities
- Perform sanitary and storm sewer maintenance, including operating a Vacuum Truck and Sewer Jetter Truck.
- Construct, repair, and replace sewer lines, manholes, catch basins, and other sewer infrastructure.
- Conduct regular inspections of pipes, manholes, catch basins, culverts, siphons, and other sewer infrastructure.
- Respond to reports of backups and flooding; investigate causes, clear blockages, and generate record documents.
- Clear trees and other obstructions from sanitary sewer easements.
- Remove roots, leaves, ice, and other debris from sewer pipes, manholes, and catch basins.
- Set up proper barricades and warning signs in accordance with safety requirements.
- Perform preventative maintenance and minor repairs on City equipment (e.g., greasing, oiling).
- Work in a team environment and assist coworkers or supervisors with additional duties as assigned.
- Assist with manual labor tasks such as raking and shoveling asphalt, rolling asphalt, pouring concrete, and mixing cement.
- Conduct technical inspections and analysis of the sewer system.
- Operate CCTV inspection equipment to rate, evaluate, and record defects per NASSCO PACP and MACP standards.
- Recommend preventative and corrective maintenance based on observations.
- Identify sources of inflow and infiltration using smoke and dye testing as well as visual inspection.
- Maintain detailed and accurate records of all maintenance, repair, and inspection activities in Cityworks.
- Perform snow and ice control using single and tandem-axle trucks equipped with augers, aerial lifts, plows, spreaders, and chemical systems.
- Be available for call-in during off hours in case of inclement weather events.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Three years of experience operating heavy equipment.
- One year of supervisory experience.
- Thorough knowledge of proper methods for transporting heavy loads, load limits, traffic safety rules, and accident prevention practices.
- Skills in operating heavy multi-purpose motor equipment under all weather conditions.
- Possession of a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with proper endorsements in the state of residency.
Preferred Qualifications
- Two years of experience inspecting and evaluating sanitary and/or storm sewer systems.
- NASSCO PACP and MACP certification.
- Ability to perform heavy manual labor in all types of weather.
- Knowledge of roadway construction or maintenance activities and experience using related equipment.
