Heavy Equipment Operator - Cortland County Department of Public Works (Recycling)

This position involves responsibility for operating specialized heavy equipment used in highway repair, construction, and maintenance projects, as well as other public works activities. The role requires greater skill and responsibility for safety compared to a Motor Equipment Operator. Duties may include routine equipment lubrication and maintenance, general labor tasks, and supervising laborers or other employees on projects.

Responsibilities

• Operate heavy automotive and highway construction/maintenance equipment.
• Perform routine lubrication and maintenance of equipment.
• Conduct general laboring tasks as needed.
• Exercise independent judgment within established guidelines.
• Supervise laborers, Motor Equipment Operators, or other laboring employees on projects.
• Perform related work as required.

Schedule

Full-time, 40 hours per week.

Pay

$24.3834 - $30.8633 per hour (CSEA Union).

Requirements

• Two years of experience operating heavy automotive equipment or highway construction and maintenance equipment.

Qualifications

• Possession of a valid New York State Class B or Class A Driver’s License with air brake endorsement at time of application.
• A New York State Class A Commercial Driver’s License with air brake and tank endorsement is required within twelve months of appointment.
• Must maintain all required endorsements and driving privileges throughout employment.

Special Requirements

• Pre-employment screenings required.
• Failure to obtain or maintain the required Class A Commercial Driver’s License and endorsements may result in disciplinary action or dismissal.

Work is performed outdoors, sometimes in inclement weather, under general supervision.
