About the role
The Public Works Department seeks a skilled and experienced individual to operate heavy construction and maintenance equipment. This position involves maneuvering and operating specialized machinery to support various infrastructure projects.
Responsibilities
- Maneuver heavy equipment and operate complex mechanisms for digging, moving earth, and materials.
- Perform skilled digging and trenching for maintenance and construction projects, adhering to exacting tolerances and specifications.
- Operate loaders to load materials into trucks or move them over short distances, ensuring payload control and equipment capacity compliance.
- Use motor-graders, scrapers, and excavators with blade attachments to set gradients for large-scale projects like roads, landscaping, and embankments.
- Operate bulldozers, scrapers, and compactors for moving earth, gravel, sand, and other materials in construction and maintenance projects.
- Inspect and prepare equipment for safe operation, perform light maintenance, and secure vehicles after use.
- Transport, load, and unload materials, equipment, tools, and supplies.
- Perform manual labor tasks such as lifting, moving, digging, and shoveling.
- Follow safety procedures, monitor work environment, and direct traffic around project sites.
- Complete various forms and documentation, communicate with supervisors, employees, and the public, and respond to emergencies.
- Operate equipment and trucks at lower levels in the job family, provide coverage during special events, and assist other employees or departments.
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED preferred; three years of experience in construction, repair, and/or maintenance of public infrastructure or a related field.
- Valid Georgia Class B Commercial Driver's License; some assignments may require a Class A Commercial Driver's License and/or special endorsements.
- Obtain and maintain Flagging Certification within the department's timeframe.
- Proficiency in operating track and large, rubber-tired equipment, including excavation, loader, motor-grader, scraper, and bulldozer operations.
- Ability to comprehend and apply county or departmental policies, practices, and procedures.
