Heavy Equipment Mechanic/Oiler (HEM III) , CDL Training Provided-Craig

About the role

The Colorado Department of Transportation has a vacancy for a Heavy Equipment Mechanic III based out of their equipment shop in Craig. This position is open to Colorado state residents only.

• New employees will be paid biweekly with 26 pay periods in a year.
• This position requires obtaining a CDL Permit within 30 days of hire and a CDL Class A or B within 120 days of hire, with no restriction on air brakes.
• Employees are eligible for full payment for their CDL physical after the first year and partial reimbursement for CDL renewals after the first year.
• CDOT provides personal protective equipment, including uniforms, boots, hard hats, gloves, safety vests, respirators, and tools.
• Full payment is provided for the CDL physical and partial reimbursement for CDL renewals after the first year.
• Employees receive CPR and first-aid training.

Responsibilities

This Journey level Equipment Mechanic position inspects, diagnoses, troubleshoots, modifies, and repairs light and heavy trucks and specialized snow, ice, and road repair equipment to preserve and assure the entire fleet of equipment is in safe operating condition following the rules and policies of the Federal Department of Transportation (DOT) and the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT).

• Performs routine preventative maintenance services per CDOT policies and procedures, including oil changes, servicing transmissions, servicing differentials, etc.
• Performs DOT/CDOT inspections on equipment.
• Installs radios and safety equipment for example first aid kit, fire extinguisher, etc.
• Performs minor repairs during maintenance services or inspections, such as wipers, lights, fastening loose hoses and wiring, etc.
• Performs on-site flat tire repairs on various trucks, including tandem axle trucks, single axle trucks, and 1-ton trucks.
• Installs special equipment such as warning lights, radios, AVL hardware, and safety equipment.
• Routes electrical wiring related to the removal and installation of devices.
• Inspects, repairs, installs components and ensures that the sections AVL reporting is functioning correctly.
• Completes documentation on all units, tracks equipment maintenance, and keeps federal DOT inspection records.
• Creates, prepares, reviews, and edits work orders in the SAP system.
• Learns to diagnose and repair a variety of heavy equipment systems.
• Learns to fabricate, machine, and weld special-use parts and accessories.
• Instructs operators in the use and care of vehicles and equipment.
• Designs and fabricates mounting brackets, special tooling and other small fabrication projects.
• Fulfills all safety procedures, wears appropriate safety equipment, and reports any safety concerns.
• Responds to emergencies and travels to remote locations in adverse weather and road conditions to perform mechanical repairs on CDOT equipment.
• Uses computers with various software applications for data input, records management, and e-mail in support of job assignments.
• Participates in regional training, work unit meetings, committees, etc.
• Led training on proper service and maintenance equipment.
• Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Four years of progressively responsible experience in automotive AND heavy equipment repair, that includes at least ONE year of experience with diagnosis and repair of heavy diesel equipment such as 10-ton double axle snowplows, tractor-trailers, bulldozers, motor graders, paving machines and/or 15' mower tractors, with current proficiency at the journey level.

• A combination of related education, formalized apprenticeship program, and/or relevant experience in an occupation related to the work assigned equal to four (4) years.
• Satisfactory completion of a formalized apprenticeship program, or higher level non-correspondence coursework from an accredited college or technical school, beyond high school, in automotive and diesel equipment mechanics or heavy equipment mechanics will be considered on a year for year basis.
• Unofficial transcripts or a copy of your certificate of completion are required if using education towards qualifications.
• Experience in automotive AND heavy equipment repair will be considered and must include at least ONE year of experience with diagnosis and repair of heavy diesel equipment such as 10-ton double axle snowplows, tractor-trailers, bulldozers, motor graders, paving machines and/or 15' mower tractors, with current proficiency at the journey level.
• College Transcripts: If you are using education to qualify, a legible copy of your official or unofficial college transcript(s) or an official foreign credential evaluation report must be submitted with your application.
