Heavy Equipment Mechanic (HEM III) - (CDL Training Provided w/ Permit) - Lamar

About the role

Join CDOT's maintenance team and help keep Colorado moving. As a Heavy Equipment Mechanic III, you'll inspect, diagnose, repair, and maintain the trucks and specialized equipment that keep our highways safe year-round.

Responsibilities

• Inspect, diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair light- and heavy-duty trucks, snowplows, and specialized highway maintenance equipment using diagnostic tools and computerized systems.
• Repair and rebuild major vehicle systems, including engines, transmissions, brakes, electrical, hydraulic, steering, suspension, fuel, and air systems.
• Perform preventative maintenance, routine inspections, DOT safety inspections, and equipment servicing to ensure fleet reliability and compliance.
• Operate and test a variety of heavy equipment to diagnose issues, verify repairs, and support maintenance operations.
• Fabricate, modify, and install equipment, components, and specialized parts to meet CDOT operational needs.
• Order parts and materials, prepare work orders, and accurately document repairs, inspections, and maintenance activities in SAP.
• Maintain a safe, organized work environment by following CDOT, DOT, and OSHA safety requirements and participating in required safety training.
• Stay current on new equipment, technology, repair techniques, and department procedures through ongoing training and professional development.

Requirements

• Experience: Four years of progressively responsible experience in automotive AND heavy equipment repair, that includes at least ONE year of experience with diagnosis and repair of heavy diesel equipment such as 10-ton double axle snowplows, tractor-trailers, bulldozers, motor graders, paving machines and/or 15' mower tractors, with current proficiency at the journey level.
• Education: A combination of related education, formalized apprenticeship program, and/or relevant experience in an occupation related to the work assigned equal to four (4) years. Satisfactory completion of a formalized apprenticeship program, or higher level non-correspondence coursework from an accredited college or technical school, beyond high school, in automotive and diesel equipment mechanics or heavy equipment mechanics will be considered on a year for year basis.
• License: Must possess a current, valid Colorado CDL Permit. Must obtain and maintain a valid Commercial Driver’s License Class A or B with no restriction on air brakes within 6 months of hire as a condition of continued employment.
• Training: Must pass a pre-employment screening which may include social security number trace, criminal records check, public court records check, educational records, and driving records checks. New employees are required to attend two weeks of maintenance training in Aurora, while veteran CDOT employees are required to attend training one week out of each year in Aurora.

Qualifications

• Must be able to read, understand, follow, and give oral and written instructions.
• Must be willing and be physically able to work in extreme temperatures (hot and cold), variable weather conditions, and at varying elevations up to 12,000 feet for long periods of time.
• Must be able to hear and communicate via cell phone and state radio to relay information and respond to field calls.
• Must be willing to respond to emergencies outside regular work hours and work overtime including weekends and holidays.
• Must be physically able to perform this position's essential job duties.

Skills

• Proven ability or accomplishment in troubleshooting, diagnosis, and repair of automotive and heavy-duty diesel vehicles and equipment.
• Extensive experience with equipment up to 10 tons is highly desirable.
• Experience designing and fabricating parts and special tools needed for unique and emergency situations.
• Medium/Heavy truck ASE Certifications in Diesel Engine, Drive Trains, Brakes, Suspension and Steering, Electrical/Electronic Systems, Heating, Ventilation, and A/C is preferred.
• Effective interpersonal and customer service skills.
• Self-starter and motivated to accomplish assigned tasks.
• Ability to work effectively in both independent and team situations.
• Strong attention to technical detail and accuracy.
• Strong commitment to safety.
