Location: Merrillville, IN Job Type: Direct Hire Starting Pay: $23.00/hour — higher pay available depending on experience Travel: Up to 50% Availability: 24/7 emergency response required Position Overview Seeking an experienced Heavy Equipment & Diesel Mechanic to keep heavy equipment, trucks, trailers, cranes, and other motorized equipment operating safely and reliably. This role involves routine maintenance, troubleshooting, field repairs, and emergency service. Responsibilities Diagnose mechanical problems and complete repairs on heavy equipment, trucks, trailers, cranes, and related machineryPerform preventive maintenance and respond to urgent repair needsReview repair priorities and coordinate work with the maintenance teamGather required parts, tools, and equipment for assigned repairsComplete work orders with mileage, operating hours, repairs, and other required detailsRespond to emergency service calls and communicate critical equipment issuesWork efficiently to reduce equipment downtimeMaintain shop tools, equipment, and work areasFollow safety procedures and applicable regulationsPerform other mechanical and maintenance duties as needed Requirements 5+ years of heavy equipment and/or trailer/crane maintenance experience5+ years of experience in at least two additional technical areas, such as:HydraulicsElectronicsSmall enginesOther related mechanical systems High school diploma/GED plus trade school, vocational training, or equivalent diesel/mechanical experienceValid driver's license with a good driving recordStrong mechanical troubleshooting and repair skillsAbility to work under pressure and meet urgent repair deadlinesGood communication and organizational skillsBasic computer skillsAbility to read, write, and communicate in EnglishProfessional heavy equipment maintenance certifications are a plus Travel & Schedule Up to 50% travel, including out-of-town and out-of-state assignmentsMust be available 24/7 for emergency callsExtended hours may be required based on operational needsAbility to work outdoors and in changing weather conditions Physical Requirements Frequent bending, twisting, stooping, walking, and liftingAbility to perform hands-on mechanical work for extended periodsRegularly lift up to 50 lbsAssistance required for items weighing more than 75 lbsAbility to safely perform work outdoors in varying weather conditions We may use artificial intelligence (AI) tools to support parts of the hiring process, such as reviewing applications, analyzing resumes, or assessing responses and identifying potential inconsistencies or verification signals in application materials based on available information.
