Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning Instructor

Classification: Professional | Reports to: Principal of the Career Tech Center

Terms: 184 total paid days position. Full family medical, dental, and vision benefits provided at no cost to the employee. Personal business days and sick time paid. Retirement through the Office of Retirement Services (Pension Plus or Defined Contribution).

Pay

This position is on the CTC Professional Scale, $52,000–$86,000 per year on the BA lane. Lanes for BA+20, MA, MA+30, and MA+60 are available.

About the role

The HVAC Instructor delivers specialized instructional programming focused on the principles and practices of Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning, and the industry. This role involves providing hands-on learning experiences, developing curriculum aligned with industry standards and potential certifications, managing technical lab environments and student activities, integrating classroom instruction with aviation career pathways and real-world applications, and maintaining effective communication with students, families, and educational colleagues.

Responsibilities

• Delivers relevant classroom and lab/workplace instruction using competency-based and outcome-based education techniques and strategies.
• Works closely with the advisory committee(s) to develop pertinent course content.
• Develops work-based learning sites for students.
• Assesses student progress using a variety of techniques and testing instruments.
• Maintains an appropriate level of two-way communication with parents and students. Keeps parents informed and interested in classroom and workplace activities and accomplishments.
• Works cooperatively with other staff to create opportunities for students.
• Maintains accurate and legally adequate data-keeping systems and student records.
• Assists in the utilization and monitoring of the program budget.
• Attends all required meetings and participates in all activities essential to program operations and Michigan Department of Education program requirements.
• Performs such other tasks and assumes such other responsibilities as may be assigned by the Principal.

Requirements

• Valid EPA 608 Certified Technician credential.
• Bachelor’s degree in education or a relevant vocational specialty area.
• Possession of a valid Annual Career Authorization in CIP Code 47.0607 area with appropriate industry licensure. (Related state-approved CIP Codes to teach 47.0607 are: 17.0401, 47.0602, or 47.9999.)
• If no Annual Career Authorization, 4,000 hours of paid recent and relevant work experience in related fields (within the last 10 years), and appropriate licensure.

• Successful experience as an instructor of secondary students in an educational setting.

Physical Requirements

Some light to moderate lifting and general mobility around the campus area may be necessary. May be required to pass a MAISD-paid physical examination and/or back x-ray before an unconditional offer of employment can be made.

Work Environment

Most work is performed in a classroom or specialized service area, at the Career Tech Center, or at community-based instructional or work sites. Travel around the community should be anticipated.
