About the Role

To assist Registered Nurses and Licensed Practical Nurses in the provision of patient care by performing assigned patient care and unit maintenance activities.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification within 30 days (American Heart Association)
  • At least one of the following:
    • One semester of nursing clinical experience
    • Worked as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) within the past 24 months
    • Successful completion of Carle's HCT In Training Program
    • Relevant medical military training
    • Completion of CNA coursework within the past 24 months

Responsibilities

  • Performs patient care activities as delegated by the nurse, ensuring patient needs and expectations are met.
  • Provides hygiene needs of assigned patients (AM/PM care, oral hygiene, perineal care, shampoo, bathing, shaving, care of TED/SCD hose).
  • Provides nutritional needs of assigned patients (tray distribution, setting up trays, offering supplements, feeding, adding tube feeding, and recording intake).
  • Provides elimination needs of assigned patients (Foley care, bowel movements, bladder training, enemas, external catheters, and records output).
  • Provides skin care of assigned patients (turning, positioning, prevention of skin breakdown, operation of special beds, nail care, back rubs).
  • Provides comfort measures (proper positioning, back rubs, oral care, wrinkle-free bed sheets, ensuring bedside essentials are within reach).
  • Provides activity needs of assigned patients (dangling, turning, chair, ambulating, walker, crutches).
  • Performs measurements of assigned patients (I&O, hemoccult, gastrocult, TPR, B/P, weights, empty drains, abdominal girth, hose measurements).
  • Performs additional skills as directed and supervised by the nurse after training and certification (e.g., intermittent urinary catheterization, clean dressing changes).
  • Assists with admission, transfer, and discharge of patients, including vital signs, height/weight, room setup, and orientation.
  • Achieves patient satisfaction by making rounds every two hours, ensuring comfort, meeting needs, and responding to call lights promptly.
  • Uses time, supplies, and resources productively to promote responsive and cost-effective care.
  • Performs unit maintenance duties to ensure a clean, organized, and efficiently operating unit (e.g., cleaning kitchen/refrigerators, stocking supplies, distributing SPD items).
  • Assumes personal responsibility for patient, environmental, and personal safety (e.g., lifting, transfers, side rails, hand hygiene, body mechanics).
  • Contributes to a department environment that promotes customer and employee satisfaction through teamwork and effective communication.
  • Attends educational offerings to maintain current knowledge of patient care and participates in peer evaluations.
  • Demonstrates values with patients, families, and hospital personnel through respect, warmth, and responsiveness.

Pay

The compensation range for this position is $17.89 per hour - $28.98 per hour. The actual compensation offered will depend on factors such as experience, qualifications, location, training, licenses, shifts worked, and compensation model.
