For more than 55 years, Family Health Centers of San Diego (FHCSD) has provided caring, affordable, high-quality health care and supportive services to everyone, with a special commitment to uninsured, low-income, and medically underserved persons. FHCSD is one of the top 10 largest federally qualified health centers (FQHCs) in the country, operating more than 90 sites across San Diego County, including primary care clinics, behavioral health facilities, physical rehabilitation clinics, dental and vision clinics, substance use treatment programs, mobile medical units, and urgent care centers.

Our staff serves over 227,000 patients annually, with 91% being low-income and 29% uninsured. Services include adult and pediatric care, chronic disease management, women’s health (including obstetrics), dental, vision, case management, physical rehabilitation, speech therapy, vaccinations, infectious disease treatment, behavioral health, substance use counseling, and specialty services such as cardiology, podiatry, endocrinology, and dermatology. FHCSD also provides intensive case management for unsheltered individuals.

As the largest community clinic provider of health care to the uninsured in San Diego County, FHCSD is also the region’s largest health care safety-net provider, school-based health care provider, and mental health provider.

About the Role

The Healthcare Operations Fellow is a structured 6-12 month fellowship designed to prepare participants for leadership roles in ambulatory care at FHCSD. This fellowship supports a strategic initiative to expand healthcare sites and locations. Fellows will engage in projects spanning finance, employee relations, clinical quality, reporting, data analysis, regulatory compliance, and infection control. Learning includes hands-on experience at clinical sites, group and individual projects, and mentorship.

Responsibilities

• Learn Patient-Centered Medical Home (PCMH) requirements for team-based and patient-centered healthcare.
• Develop an understanding of FHCSD’s programs, services, and populations served; manage clinic operations and service lines.
• Gain knowledge of healthcare administration, balancing community engagement with government relations and regulations.
• Understand the regulatory environment of a community healthcare organization.
• Learn healthcare finance and fiscal management, including profit and loss oversight and net gain attainment.
• Study LEAN and process improvement methodologies to drive positive change.
• Develop supervisory skills to effectively lead and manage teams.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Business, Healthcare, Non-Profit Management, or a related discipline (required). Master’s degree (preferred).
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, communication, and writing skills.
• Proven ability to lead and drive positive change through collaboration.
• Experience maintaining strong working relationships with employees, coworkers, and departments.
• Exceptional organizational, time-management, and prioritization skills; ability to meet deadlines.
• Experience or interest in working with diverse populations; cultural sensitivity and respect for diversity.
• Interest in nonprofit management, community development, and healthcare administration.
• Commitment to equal access to healthcare for underinsured/uninsured individuals.
• Social consciousness demonstrated through volunteer or paid work in mission-centered organizations.
• Creativity and flexibility.
• Must have a car, valid California driver’s license, and proof of minimum car insurance (limits of $100,000 recommended). An acceptable driving record is required. Travel between sites is an essential function of the role.

Pay

$70,304.00 per year.
