Responsible Duties
- Evaluates programs and projects to assure compliance with all environmental, safety and security standards.
- Determines temporary means and methods necessary to reduce danger to patients or staff during construction.
- Evaluates project requirements and identifies ways to mitigate project risk.
- Maintains construction specifications and drawings, and updates technical reference library.
- Trains service staff on technical issues and assists with technical and administrative issues related to infrastructure operations.
- Develops initial concept documents, creates and maintains project and lease applications in multiple VA database systems.
- Communicates with Supervisory Project Engineer, Assistant Chief and Chief of Engineering about facility capital planning needs.
- Trains facility maintenance staff on new equipment or complex utility systems.
- Prepares correspondence, technical reports, estimates, fact sheets, progress reports, schedules, progress payments, and close-out documents.
- Reviews and evaluates shop drawings, samples, and material certifications submitted by contractors.
Technical Expertise
- Proficient in OSHA, NFPA, ANSI and other relevant codes and standards.
- Knowledge of mechanical, electrical, structural, civil or other engineering/architectural principles, practices and their applications in the healthcare environment.
- Knowledge of healthcare engineering related standards, codes, policies and regulations, including state and local codes.
Communication and Training
- Communicates effectively orally and in writing with internal and external customers with tact and diplomacy.
- Trains service staff on technical issues and new equipment/systems.
- Develops material for clinical or administrative staff addressing engineering technology and theory used in healthcare.
- Advises staff on emerging engineering technology related to a healthcare facility, keeping abreast of changes in such technology.
