Health Unit Manager

About the Role

The Michigan Department of Corrections (MDOC) is a Gold Level Veteran Friendly Employer, with nearly 1,500 veterans and actively serving military members employed across the department. This position manages health services at a correctional health care complex, overseeing ambulatory care, urgent and emergent services, receptions center, inpatient unit, acute mental health, segregation, boot camp, dialysis, and all intermediate care. Responsibilities include coordinating clinical activities, ancillary and support services, and serving as a resource/liaison to dental and mental health. The role may also involve providing direct clinical care when appropriate.

This is a test-designated position with direct contact and supervisory responsibility over prisoners for more than 50% of work time. The workstation is located inside the secure perimeter of the facility.

Responsibilities

• Manage and coordinate all clinical activities within the correctional health care complex.
• Oversee ancillary and support services for health care delivery.
• Serve as a resource and liaison to dental and mental health services.
• Provide direct clinical care as needed.

Requirements

• Completion of a degree in nursing or a nursing school educational program accepted for registered nurse licensure by the Michigan Board of Nursing.
• Two years of experience equivalent to a Registered Nurse 13 or a Registered Nurse Manager 13, or one year equivalent to a Registered Nurse 14 or a Registered Nurse Manager 14.
• Possession of a Michigan registered nurse license in good standing.
• Must meet ethical standards for state classified service, including reporting any potential conflicts of interest.
• New hires or returning employees (after more than two years) must complete Non-Custody New Employee Training (NCNET), ranging from 40 to 80 hours of in-person training based on offender contact and job classification, plus additional online training.

Additional Information

Applicants with felony convictions may be screened out in accordance with Public Act 191 of 2017. Those convicted of a misdemeanor or felony are ineligible for employment until satisfactory completion of any sentence, including parole or probation.
