Responsibilities

• Act as receptionist and assist in-patient care delivery when appropriate.
• Answer telephone calls promptly and politely, addressing questions as appropriate and ensuring accurate messages reach the correct parties.
• Respond to patient call/emergency lights when nursing staff is unavailable.
• Greet patients, visitors, physicians, and other health team members politely and direct them appropriately.
• Anticipate the needs of physicians, staff, patients, and visitors (e.g., pulling charts for rounds, greeting people by name when possible).
• Maintain knowledge of and efficiently utilize all computer applications for assigned nursing units.
• Develop the ability to work effectively in at least 2 nursing units within one year of hire.
• Prepare and maintain patient charts, including:
  • Maintaining sufficient chart supplies.
  • Assembling new patient charts and preparing them in advance when appropriate.
  • Accommodating needs for special forms (e.g., renal, cardiac, diabetic, neuro flow sheets).
  • Following guidelines for thinning charts.
  • Filing reports such as lab results, x-rays, EKGs, H & Ps, and consults.
  • Communicating abnormal results to the appropriate person.
  • Filing charts for easy retrieval.
• Assist in admission, transfer, and discharge processing:
  • Verify room availability for occupancy.
  • Communicate with staff regarding new admissions, transfers, and discharges.
  • Compile admission paperwork (e.g., new and old charts, Kardex, listing allergies) in accordance with unit specifications.

• Ability to perform clerical duties supporting the daily activities of nursing units.
• Work cooperatively with nursing staff and other health team members to enhance quality patient care and patient satisfaction.
• Adhere to MercyOne’s performance expectations and perform all defined services in accordance with the mission, vision, and values of MercyOne.
