About the role

The Health Technician - Virtual Safety Monitor (VSM) is located at the Orlando VA Healthcare System - Lake Nona Campus. The incumbent functions as a member of the Nursing team and is responsible for ensuring the safety and well-being of patients through advanced virtual monitoring systems.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains visual observation of all patients on the system - always
    Verbal redirects patients over digital 2-way audio device that is in patient room
    Immediately alerts nursing staff if the patient requires assistance
  • Documents all admissions - discharges - adverse events - and routine observations as required and outlined by the Tele sitter program
  • Provides floor staff with information in a timely fashion when patients appear to pose a threat to themselves or others
  • Affirms patient environment safety and seeks assistance with removal of any potential safety hazard from room and reports findings to appropriate staff members
  • Escalates issues in a timely manner to staff nurse - unit charge nurse - or nursing manager/supervisor as appropriate
  • Documents all monitoring activities - patient interactions - and interventions in electronic medical records (EMR) to ensure comprehensive patient care documentation
  • Participates in report with on-coming monitor staff when arriving for shift - and upon completion of shift
  • Performs other related duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • To qualify for this position - applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement - 07/17/2026.
  • Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement.
  • For a GS-6 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-5.
  • The grade may have been in any occupation - but must have been held in the Federal service.
  • An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials.
  • If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year - it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade - as required by the announcement.
  • In this instance - you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade.
  • Note: Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment.
  • Individual Occupational Requirement for Health Aid and Technician (0640) Series (IOR): An IOR is a basic requirement that must be met in order to qualify for entry into this job series - and it is something that can't be waived.
  • Positions in this series range widely in type and include support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists - speech pathologists - medical officers - and optometrists.
  • Therefore - technician experience is experience that required application of the knowledge - methods - and techniques of the position to be filled.

  • In addition to meeting the Individual Occupational Requirement - applicants must also meet the specialized experience.
  • You may qualify based on your experience as described below:
  • Specialized Experience-Submitted SF-50: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-05 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization.
  • Examples of specialized experience would typically include - but are not limited to: Monitoring patients from a remote location and redirect them when necessary to ensure patient safety; Compiling - recording - reviewing - selecting - and basic interpretation of data collection and information that relate to patient care; Responding to patient needs and changes in patient priority depending on patient presentation and safety intervention; Proficiency in software applications to include electronic healthcare records systems; Regular and recurring contact with patients and the multidisciplinary team for the purpose of providing a range of care and services and/or obtaining facts or information.
