About the role

The Health Science Teacher position at Nipomo High School is a temporary position starting in the 2026-2027 school year. The position requires a valid California teaching credential with an authorization to teach Health Science in grades 9-12, CLAD/BCLAD/EL Authorization, and a Bachelor's Degree with relevant coursework.

Responsibilities

  • Teach health science and incorporate critical learning procedures in both a classroom and laboratory setting.
  • Aid students' understanding of health science and the development of key analytical skills in a supportive environment.
  • Develop students' understanding of literature research in health science concepts.
  • Organize storage areas and control the use of materials, equipment, and tools to prevent loss or abuse.
  • Instruct students in citizenship and basic subject matter as specified in state laws, regulations, and District policies.
  • Create and maintain clear and appropriate lesson plans and identify instructional materials.
  • Provide individualized and small group instruction (as necessary) to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each pupil.
  • Determine the appropriate pace for instruction related to students' abilities and explain material and subject content to students and parents.
  • Differentiate instruction for students based upon need and work with students and other teachers in inclusive settings.
  • Evaluate students' academic and social growth, keep appropriate records, prepare student progress reports, and provide accurate and constructive feedback to students and parents.
  • Use data to improve the learning and instruction process.
  • Create and maintain an environment that fosters student creativity, critical thinking skills, academic achievement, and the development of lifelong skills.
  • Show competence and confidence in working with new technology and various application packages.
  • Maximize opportunities for student success by creating positive mentoring and working relationships with students and colleagues.
  • Create a classroom environment reflective of the 21st century skills and the various student individual needs.
  • Be a role-model for students regarding life-long learning and professional behavior.
  • Establish and implement a classroom discipline policy to articulate and maintain standards of expected pupil behavior and achieve an effective learning environment in the classroom.
  • Maintain a classroom atmosphere conducive to learning.
  • Provide students with additional instruction as required if they need support in academic skill development.
  • Maintain positive staff relations; work closely with the site principal to collaboratively lead the school through shared decision-making processes; cooperate with other professional staff members to identify student needs and develop assessments to solve health, attitude, and learning problems; participate in faculty committees, meetings, and other faculty-sponsored programs supporting the educational program; demonstrate regular and timely attendance; network and collegiality, mutual support, and deep individual and collective reflection and expected amongst staff; promote a positive image of public education; willingly engage with community and business partners to be incorporated as a resource in curriculum development and student projects; handle multiple roles and adjunct duties to make the school work for the students.
  • Attend and participate in required in-service activities.
  • Meet deadlines; maintain appropriate records and prepare progress reports as required; follow district promotion policy.
  • Follow District and Schools' policies.

Requirements

The Health Science Teacher position requires a valid California teaching credential with an authorization to teach Health Science in grades 9-12, CLAD/BCLAD/EL Authorization, and a Bachelor's Degree with relevant coursework. Additional requirements include:

  • Valid California Driver's License.
  • Pass State and Federal fingerprint clearances.
  • Complete all pre-employment training including but not limited to Child Abuse Reporting and Sexual Harassment/Abusive Conduct.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate should have prior teaching experience, resourcefulness, innovation, helpfulness, diligence, persistence, and a willingness to work with colleagues and students. They should also show competence and confidence in working with new technology and various application packages.

Skills

The Health Science Teacher should be able to teach at various levels of instruction, including advanced placement courses. They should also be able to evaluate students' academic and social growth, keep appropriate records, and provide accurate and constructive feedback to students and parents.

Pay

The annual entry level salary placement for a full-time position ranges from $60,544 to $100,773, based on years of full-time credentialed teaching experience and units of college coursework beyond a Bachelor's degree. The salary is based on prorated FTE and prior experience.

Schedule

The Health Science Teacher will work 184 days according to the District Instructional Calendar, with an exempt status as a Teaching Professional Employee under the FLSA.
