About the role

Assist with the duties of the unit and provide guidance to faculty, staff, and students on safety-related matters. Essential Functions include maintaining current knowledge of relevant regulations and advising personnel of policy violations, ensuring regulatory compliance, conducting inspections, facilitating safety awareness programs, receiving and investigating complaints, coordinating laboratory setup, supporting the department in creating policies, procedures, and resources, communicating with administrators, faculty, staff, and students regarding safety, assisting in the resolution of audit findings, and assisting with the development and review of laboratory procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain current knowledge of relevant regulations and advise appropriate personnel of any violations.
  • Ensure all relevant areas and functions have knowledge of relevant rules and regulations.
  • Review projects to facilitate regulatory compliance.
  • Perform necessary analysis/evaluations and make recommendations for compliance with regulatory requirements and best practices.
  • Conduct basic and routine inspections.
  • Facilitate safety awareness programs.
  • Receive and investigate complaints and/or concerns.
  • Facilitate waste management operations (radioactive, chemical, and/or biohazardous) when appropriate.
  • Facilitate proper workflow across unit.
  • Absorb and monitor inventories (radioactive, chemical, and/or biohazardous).
  • Coordinate laboratory setup and related activities with college Facilities teams or other necessary personnel.
  • Support the department in the creation of policies, procedures, and resources.
  • Communicate with administrators, faculty, staff, and students regarding safety bulletins, policies, and inquiries.
  • Assist in the resolution of audit findings and issues where appropriate.
  • Assist with development and review of laboratory procedures.
  • May provide direct and/or indirect supervision to exempt and non-exempt staff (i.e., hiring/firing, performance evaluations, disciplinary action, approve time off, etc.).
  • Perform related duties based on departmental need.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in industrial hygiene, physical science, chemistry, or biology.
  • Four (4) years of relevant work experience and/or other specialized training can be used in lieu of education requirement.
  • Work experience must be in environmental health and safety, basic or clinical research, health physics, or compliance.
  • Experience working in or with wet labs is required.

Qualifications

  • Must obtain "trustworthy and reliable status" as outlined by Ohio Department of Health within three (3) months of employment.

Skills

Skills include knowledge of relevant regulations, ability to maintain current knowledge, and proficiency in regulatory compliance. Proficiency in safety awareness programs and waste management operations is also required.
