Health, Safety, and Environmental Manager
About the role
The Health, Safety, and Environmental Manager oversees site HSE programs, pursues an incident-free workplace, and advances sustainability. They provide oversight and guidance to Safety, Health, and Workers’ Compensation, implement environmental management systems, and manage regulatory agencies.
Responsibilities
- Leads Safety Excellence, Safety Above All Else, and Safe Align implementation
- Pursues an incident-free workplace
- Advances sustainability through performance standards
- Develops functional reports with appropriate competencies
- Oversees compliance and guidance for Safety, Health, and Workers’ Compensation
- Implements programs and initiatives to advance environmental, health, safety, and sustainability metrics
- Manages regulatory agencies, third-party audits, inspections, inquiries, and reporting
- Manages workers' compensation claims to ensure quality of care, expedite return to work, and control costs
- Oversees mill security processes
- Works with mill management on performance management and development opportunities
- Mentors, coaches, and develops Environmental Engineers, Safety Managers, and Safety Engineers
- Reviews RACI, roles, and responsibilities
- Manages internal and external communications
- Acts as primary local contact/liaison for community environmental issues
- Influences local and state officials
- Fulfills area-specific 5S expectations
- Participates in duty coverage team rotations including weekends and on-call coverage
Qualifications, Skills, And Knowledge
- Minimum Bachelor’s degree in science, engineering, or occupational health and safety or related field
- Minimum of 8-12 years’ experience in manufacturing environments, forest products industry preferred
- Strong written and verbal communication skills; problem-solving, negotiation, presentation, and training delivery skills
- Professional certification or equivalent (CSP, CIH), with advanced degree preferred
- Union Environment experience strongly preferred
- Expert knowledge of OSHA/EPA regulations
- Experience in forest products industry or similar risk profile industry
- Collaborative skills, organizational agility, innovation management skills, and ability to resolve problems in a timely manner
- Practical understanding of governance and regulation, including both law and politics
