Health Information Manager
About the role
The Compliance and Health Informatics Department is a cornerstone of Cornell Health, leading efforts to ensure full adherence to federal and state regulations, accreditation standards, and university policies while also advancing healthcare technology excellence.
Responsibilities
- Manage the Cornell Health Compliance Program, health records documentation, compliance, access and sharing, oversee risk identification and mitigation, and direct AAAHC/Patient Centered Medical Home accreditation readiness.
- Optimize the Electronic Health Record (EHR) and associated systems, deploy and train staff on clinical information systems, manage health record data, ensure immunization requirements compliance, produce accurate clinical reporting, and safeguard HIPAA privacy and security.
- Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders, including medical and counseling providers, administrators, Cornell’s Office of General Counsel, and external healthcare organizations.
- Support electronic health record (EHR) optimization through collaboration with technical teams to improve workflows, reduce documentation errors, and support system enhancements.
- Train and mentor staff, oversee hiring and performance management, and foster a collaborative, high-performing team environment.
- Contribute to organizational initiatives, including immunization compliance efforts, training programs, and cross-functional committees.
Requirements
Expertise in current federal, state regulations, including HIPAA and CFR 42, as well as University policies and procedures related to the treatment of student records.
Expertise in the standards of medical and counseling documentation.
Demonstrated organization, facilitation, communication and presentation skills.
Sound judgment in decision making.
Attention to detail in identifying errors and inconsistencies and ability to identify and remediate any contributing workflow processes.
Ability to communicate information clearly and consistently to diverse audiences.
Collaborative and effective communication skills.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree and current certification as a Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA).
- Minimum of three (3) years of experience in health information management.
- Demonstrated expertise in healthcare-related legal and regulatory mandates and accrediting standards.
- Proficiency with healthcare-related information systems and software applications, particularly in document management and transmission.
- Knowledge of and ability to apply principles of Health Information Management, project management and change management.
- Demonstrated skill in understanding cultural differences.
