Healthful Stories is a Seattle‑based 501(c)(3) patient‑advocacy nonprofit that conducts structured, longitudinal interviews with individuals living with chronic and complex health conditions. The organization creates rich, firsthand accounts of the patient journey to inform patients, caregivers, researchers, and the broader healthcare community. Volunteers contribute to patient interviewing, content development, video editing, and community outreach, applying skills from public health, journalism, communications, technology, and health sciences.
About the Role
The Health Communications Specialist will craft the written voice that connects Healthful Stories’ work to volunteers, supporters, partners, media, and the public. The role spans three audiences: a regular newsletter for volunteers, donors, and supporters; internal communications that keep a growing volunteer team aligned; and external communications that represent the organization credibly to partners and the public. This position offers preparation for careers in corporate affairs, public affairs, or communications.
Responsibilities
- Write and produce a regular newsletter for volunteers, donors, and supporters.
- Draft internal communications that keep volunteer teams (Web, Fundraising, Policy, Research) aligned and informed.
- Shape external communications such as press‑style statements, partner‑facing materials, and public messaging in coordination with the President.
- Maintain a consistent voice and message discipline across all three communication types.
- Collaborate with the Social Media Manager, Fundraiser, and Health Policy & Coalition Manager to ensure messaging stays aligned across channels.
- Help develop messaging for major moments such as campaign launches, policy positions, and program milestones.
Requirements
- Strong writing skills across formats such as newsletters, internal memos, and public‑facing statements, with the ability to shift registers as needed.
- Interest in or experience with a career path in corporate affairs, public affairs, communications, or public‑health messaging.
- Ability to translate complex or sensitive material for different audiences without losing accuracy or nuance.
- Attention to detail and reliability with a regular publishing cadence.
- Experience in journalism, communications, public health, or a related field is a plus but not required.
What You’ll Gain
- Direct experience in multi‑audience communications work focused on internal alignment, external representation, and stakeholder‑facing messaging.
- Opportunity to build a portfolio of newsletters and communications materials.
- Close collaboration with the President on shaping the organization’s public voice.
- Exposure to how a mission‑driven organization manages its reputation and relationships across diverse audiences.
