About the Role

The Health Care Assistant (HCA) serves as the first impression of Planned Parenthood South Atlantic (PPSAT) by providing friendly and efficient services to clients arriving at the health center for services or information. The HCA maintains front and back office operations, assists providers with daily in-office procedures, blood draws, and provides patient education.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains accurate and complete documentation including charts, logs, etc.
  • Provides education via telephone or face-to-face in a non-judgmental manner to patients, offering support and information on reproductive and sexual health issues.
  • Verifies and interprets insurance coverage and benefits both electronically and over the phone.
  • Assists clinicians in making patient referrals and documents scheduled appointments in patient charts.
  • Provides telephone coverage for incoming calls, assists with appointment requests, and handles information inquiries.
  • Interprets and communicates clinic fee scales, pricing information, and patient insurance benefits, including copayments/coinsurance.
  • Manages patient fee receipts, reconciles computer journal sheets with daily deposits, and reports to the Finance Department.
  • Ensures patients complete all necessary forms and obtains patient consents for services efficiently and accurately.
  • Follows Health Center procedures for processing and providing OTC and prescription medications and birth control supplies.
  • Assists in maintaining the Health Center’s working order by ensuring an adequate stock of supplies.
  • Participates in maintaining uniform patient record systems, including computer data, EHR documentation, and patient filing systems.
  • Works as a team member to meet or exceed center productivity and customer satisfaction goals.
  • Serves as laboratory testing personnel: collects and prepares laboratory specimens; maintains and checks laboratory instruments; performs laboratory-related quality controls; orders and results laboratory tests in the medical record; draws blood; disposes of contaminated supplies; performs and interprets in-house laboratory tests; participates in competency and proficiency requirements; demonstrates problem-solving skills.

Schedule

This is a full-time opportunity, working 35-39 hours per week:

  • Mon: 8:30 AM - 6:00 PM
  • Tue: 8:30 AM - 5:00 PM
  • Wed: 8:30 AM - 5:00 PM
  • Thu: 8:30 AM - 3:00 PM
  • Fri: 8:30 AM - 2:00 PM

All staff are expected to remain at the health center until all patients are checked out, documentation is completed, and the health center is cleaned.

Pay

All HCAs start at $23.25 an hour and are eligible for periodic pay increases based on tenure and skill checkoffs. PPSAT's compensation philosophy is based on equity and transparency.

Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States. This position requires a background check once a job offer is extended to the final candidate. A conviction is not an absolute bar to employment; factors such as the age of the offense, evidence of rehabilitation, seriousness of violation, and job relatedness are considered.
