Qualifications

  • Ability to organize and supervise a total sports program.
  • Previous successful coaching experience in assigned sport (major sports).
  • Substantial knowledge of the technical aspects of the sport and commitment to examining new theories and procedures pertinent to the field.
  • Serves as an appropriate role model for student athletes through instructions and actions.

Reports to the athletic director, who provides overall objectives and final evaluation in conjunction with the high school principals.

Responsibilities

General

  • Instruct athletes in fundamental skills, strategy, and physical training to achieve individual and team success.
  • Demonstrate behaviors that foster socially acceptable character development, self-discipline, self-confidence, and pride of accomplishment in student athletes.
  • Upgrade knowledge and skills through coaching clinics, observations, and consultation.
  • Understand the influence of athletic programs on the community’s image and balance public pressure for winning with objectives of good sportsmanship and mental health.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Thorough knowledge and implementation of all athletic policies approved by the Plainwell Community Schools’ Board of Education.
  • Knowledge of system, state, and league regulations; consistent implementation and interpretation for staff.
  • Adherence to proper administrative channels for requests or grievances.
  • Attendance at required public, staff, and departmental meetings.

Staff Responsibilities

  • Establish the fundamental philosophy, skills, and techniques to be taught by staff.
  • Design and conduct conferences, clinics, and staff meetings to ensure program awareness.
  • Encourage professional growth through clinic attendance and staff development.
  • Delegate duties, supervise implementation, and evaluate staff effectiveness at season’s end.
  • Maintain discipline, address grievances, and foster morale and cooperation.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the athletic director or principal.

Administrative Duties

  • Assist the athletic director in scheduling, transportation, and requirements for tournaments and special events.
  • Prepare for scheduled sport events or practices and adhere to facility times.
  • Coordinate with maintenance and school employees.
  • Provide documentation for state and system requirements (physical examinations, parental consent, eligibility).
  • Ensure proper safeguards for maintenance and protection of assigned equipment and sites.
  • Advise the athletic director and recommend policy, method, or procedural changes.

Student Responsibilities

  • Serve as a mentor to promote character traits such as trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship.
  • Monitor student athletes’ grades and conduct.
  • Provide assistance, guidance, and safeguards during practices, games, and travel.
  • Communicate training rules and sport-specific regulations to participants.
  • Initiate programs and policies for injuries, medical attention, and emergencies.
  • Complete and submit paperwork for disabling athletic injuries within 24 hours.
  • Direct student managers, assistants, and statisticians.
  • Enforce discipline, delineate due process procedures, and contact parents when necessary.
  • Assist athletes with college or advanced educational selection.

Finance and Equipment

  • Participate in budgeting with the athletic director to establish requirements for the next season.
  • Recommend equipment guidelines (type, style, color, technical specifications).
  • Operate within budget appropriations and account for all equipment.
  • Collect costs for lost or unreturned equipment.
  • Arrange for issuing, storing, and reconditioning of equipment; submit annual inventory and records.
  • Properly mark and identify all equipment before issuing or storing.
  • Monitor equipment rooms and coaches’ offices; authorize access and requisitions.
  • Permit athletes in authorized areas only at appropriate times.
  • Inspect locker rooms before and after practices and games for cleanliness.
  • Maintain cleanliness and upkeep of specific sport equipment.
  • Secure all doors, lights, windows, and locks if custodians are not on duty.
  • Instill respect for equipment and school property in athletes.

Public Relations

  • Organize preseason meetings for parents, coaches, players, and guests.
  • Promote the sport within the school by recruiting athletes not in other programs.
  • Promote the sport externally through news media, little league programs, or other feasible methods.
  • Maintain quality, effectiveness, and validity of oral or written releases to local media.
  • Foster good public relations with news media, booster clubs, parents, officials, volunteers, and fans.
  • Provide information to news media concerning schedules, tournaments, and results.
