About the Role
This position serves as the lead instructor and coordinator for all aspects of the athletic program, including practice and game preparation, athlete development, and program administration. The role involves close collaboration with athletic staff, student-athletes, and university stakeholders to ensure compliance with NCAA, conference, and institutional policies while fostering a competitive and positive team environment.
Responsibilities
- Lead and coordinate all elements of practices and games, including preparation, drill execution, one-on-one athlete development, and game-day responsibilities.
- Develop and communicate a program philosophy to all stakeholders.
- Design and recommend strategies for program success, including practice plans, game strategies, and team development.
- Supervise assistant coaches and athletic instructors within the program.
- Maintain fair, consistent, and understanding relationships with athletes while following due process for discipline.
- Collaborate with strength and conditioning staff to design targeted training programs for athletes and teams.
- Work closely with athletic trainers and follow injury protocols.
- Coordinate team tryouts and player selection.
- Develop and execute recruitment plans for prospective student-athletes, including evaluations and official visit itineraries in compliance with NCAA requirements.
- Ensure compliance with all University and NCAA policies and regulations, including attending rules education sessions and completing necessary forms.
- Work with the Athletic Director to recommend league policy and procedure changes.
- Attend athletic department meetings and collaborate on schedules, programs, and engagement initiatives.
- Mentor student-athletes on proper conduct and monitor their academic progress to ensure compliance with university and NCAA standards.
- Manage administrative requirements, including travel arrangements, equipment purchases, budget management, and paperwork deadlines (rosters, physicals, officials’ ratings).
- Engage in positive public relations and communications with media, parents, and alumni.
- Develop community outreach programs, fundraising, and promotional activities in collaboration with internal staff and University Development.
- Represent the department and institution professionally to internal and external constituents.
- Maintain composure and exemplary conduct during practices and games.
- Dress appropriately and professionally for all athletic and university functions.
- Foster school spirit by promoting other sports.
- Perform all other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution.
- Previous collegiate coaching experience or equivalent experience.
- Valid driver’s license and certifications in CPR and AED.
- Excellent organizational skills; ability to multi-task, meet deadlines, and work independently.
- Ability to effectively communicate with diverse constituencies.
- Understanding of and compliance with NCAA, conference, and University rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
- Interest in supporting John Carroll’s mission to inspire individuals to excel in learning, leadership, and service.

- Demonstrated ability to motivate students in a positive manner.
- Experience planning and organizing effectively, teaching sport fundamentals and techniques, and coaching competitive teams.
- Demonstrated ability to provide positive leadership and serve as a role model for athletes and colleagues.
- Successful prior participation in the sport at the high school, college, or professional level.
