About the role
The Kennebec Valley YMCA is seeking a motivated and inclusive YMCA Head Swim Coach to lead KVYMCA Stingrays! This is an opportunity for a coach who is passionate about developing swimmers at all levels—from early competitive athletes to those pursuing collegiate swimming—while building a positive, team-centered culture.
Responsibilities
- Lead swim practices for multiple age groups (ages 6 to 18) and ability levels (Beginner to High School/National level).
- Create seasonal training plans that promote skill development, sportsmanship, teamwork and personal growth.
- Coach swimmers during practices and weekend swim meets.
- Create an inclusive team environment aligned with YMCA competencies and values.
- Recruit and retain swimmers, support team growth and community engagement.
- Communicate regularly with swimmers, parents/guardians, and YMCA staff regarding schedules, expectations, and athlete progress.
- Collaborate with assistant coaches and volunteers, provide leadership and mentoring.
- Ensure swimmer safety and enforce YMCA policies and procedures at all times.
- Maintain required certifications and comply with YMCA standards.
- Aid with program administration, including meet entries, rosters and scheduling as needed.
Qualifications
- Current or ability to obtain YMCA Swimming Coach Certification
- Current or ability to obtain USA Swimming Coach Certification
- Current SafeSport Certification (USA Swimming) or ability to obtain
- Current CPR/AED/First Aid and Lifeguarding certifications or ability to obtain
- Previous swim coaching experience preferred (all age groups and ability levels)
- Knowledge of competitive swimming techniques, training principles, and meet procedures
- Ability to work with diverse populations and create an inclusive team environment
- Strong communication, organizational and leadership skills
